Auditions galore!

Life is chugging alone and it's got a happy tinge to it. Lisi and I start looking for an apartment for our pending move-out date soon. Lots of hope and excitement in the air for me. The bulk of the auditions I've been on I have received callbacks the following day for. I feel like I'm doing something right.

Ogunquit Playhouse was the craziest. Equity theatre in Maine that was doing "Hairspray" and it took place on a weekend. I've learned the difference between a weekday audition and weekend one is dramatic. Sometimes a difference of 400 people! So much of this non-equity game is just waiting....and waiting. It's interesting to hear what people are singing repeatedly and to see the same group of people that really make the rounds on the audition circuit. It's fun to report back to Lisi although I know that she wishes she was free to play with me in the land of this absolutely nutty profession. I do feel really prepared walking in the audition rooms though and I credit good college training and experience with that. The next audition was for a shady production of "Dreamgirls" which I had hoped would be something amazing but it turned out to be a non-profit theatre company's producers casting themselves in the leading roles. I did meet a friend out of it named Key though who is such a sweetie and we might get lunch soon. We have long Myspace message conversations. Hehe. She is new to the audition scene and I feel like her mentor even though she is older than me. Oh, I turned 22! Damn, I'm getting older. Anway, back to the "Dreamgirls" sketchiness. Producers casting themselves and being unclear? I have no respect for that. I had such high hopes, especially with it being my favorite show. Oh well, everything in New York City can't be completely trustworthy. I auditioned for the non-Equity national tours of "Hairspray" and "Gypsy" and got called back to dance for both. "Gypsy" I also got to sing some extra stuff and I keep seeing Ashley Anderson from "You're the One That I Want" everywhere. Oy...girl can dance but she can't sing. Also have seen Lawrence Fishbourne, Ashley Parker Angel on the street as well as tons of Broadway stars including Julia Murney, Mara Davi and Jeffery Seller the producer of RENT. New York is such a mish mosh especially in the theatre district and you're always bound to see people.

Theatre-wise I have seen "Tarzan" with Lisi which I actually really enjoyed. I found the show to be very entertaining and I want to have Josh Strickland's babies? He's unbelievably hot with a gorgeous voice to match and Jenn Gambatese' tone makes me love her to bits. Have also been lucky enough to attend the final dress rehearsals for "The Pirate Queen" and "Curtains". "Curtains" was fabulous and is a serious Tony contender. Karen Ziemba is just the epitome of musical theatre and she's still loving it. It shows. The dancing was incredible and it was a great last collaboration between John Kander and the late Fred Ebb. "The Pirate Queen", while having the powerhouse Stephanie J. Block, just wasn't well done. Too much money on stage and so little to show for it. I just didn't care about any of the characters. I will be going back soon though if I get a free ticket from my friend Tim whose boyfriend is involved in Broadway marketing and I will see how things have changed in previews.

I had a job interview at the Royalton Hotel this week with the head of human resources who will be getting back to me shortly. I feel like I really showed my personality to her because I could tell she was leary at first about my having no hotel experience. Then she just really opened up and enjoyed talking to me. She (Dawn) asked me some interesting questions like "What was your last moment of true joy in your life?" The Morgans Hotel Group is such a cool company to work for and I hope that works out. We'll see. That's the scoop on life in NYC so far. I had an audition for "Aida" at an Equity theatre in upstate New York called Artpark today and I am called back to dance tomorrow. Time to nab a job!! :-)

P.S. The Spice Girls are going on tour in the fall after much negotiation. Yes, you read that right. AHHHHHHHH! Amazing.

life, auditions
