Max gasped, dropping to his knees with the force of the grip around his fingers. A long, low moo echoed around the bedroom. "Sorry, Max," Danny muttered eventually, letting go. "I didn't mean to hurt you."
Max lifted his hand and inspected it. His fingers were purple, and he could make out the imprint of Danny's on them. But he didn't care. He tried to muster an Expression of Bravery (TM) as he leaned over and stroked Danny's hair. "I'm fine. I'm just sorry you have to go through this."
Taylor was still laughing. Max shot a glare at her. Alyssa did the same, then mopped Danny's forehead. "Are you sure we can't get a doctor?" Danny asked plaintively.
"I'm sorry, Danny, I'm really sorry," Max said again, groaning inwardly.
He just couldn't believe this, but he had to keep reminding himself that Princess Shayla wasn't exactly a native of this time or this culture. So when she'd said she knew magic that could give them the baby they'd wanted, and Danny had agreed enthusiastically, they'd hoped to adopt a baby in need, or to have a new baby in a basket or something. Not to have Danny instantly nine months pregnant and in labour.
"I don't think a doctor would cope well," Alyssa said apologetically. "But Cole will be back soon with the focus items for you."
Reading up on Lamaze with Danny crushing his hand off had been an education in itself for Max.
The door burst open and Cole rushed in. "Here you go! Daisies, your teddy, a blankie, and a cowbell."
Taylor blinked. "He wants a cowbell?"
Max sighed. "Yes, and I suspect--" Danny smashed it over his head. Max dropped to his knees again, clutching the injured spot. "I suspect I know what he wants it for," he finished resignedly.
A long, painful moo issued forth from Danny again. Max hoped it wouldn't be much longer. He wasn't sure he could survive.
