I've been thinking.
I never draw fanart, and yet I have tons of which I'd like to do. I've seen fanart prints go like mad at conventions. I may not be
sekiyoku, but hey, what she makes in one con is what it takes me all year to make in commissions (much admiration to you, Sylvia). I have commissions closed right now. I am wondering if I should close them permanently to focus on fanart.
That, or try a new system. Whereupon, each month, I offer a different commission type and amount (eg - 3 Colored Headshots at $20 each for January, 1 CG Full-body at $50 for March, etc) , and it's first come first serve, rather than taking every order that comes my way (I have yet to turn anyone down). I'd balance it out by also doing a free sketch every month - also first-come-first serve (unless the person has got one already) - and an art trade every so often when I'm not doing one for PE. In between, I'll try to churn out fanart prints interspersed with original work.
So, it's:
A) Keep doing infinite commissions like I am now.
B) Close commissions and do infinite fanart.
C) Do limited commissions and fanart.
Please note that all of the above is in terms of money-making, artwise. Fr those of you who watch me for my real work, so to say, original art production will not be affected - I want to try at least one original piece a month from now on. It also means I will be trying for a more classical anime style for my fanart, but again, style of my original work will not be affected.
Feedback, please. To those who are interested in buying - would limiting when and what kind of commissions you can get bother you? To those who do fanart - does this get you more exposure than doing commissions? To those who buy prints - do you gravitates towards fanart? Any comments appreciated. This is important to me.
