In this episode of Coin Tales From The Bourse Floor, FUN Convention TV spoke with Bill Weikel, PhD of Patriot Rare Coins. Bill never misses a F.U.N. Convention. I met him in 2007 and we became fast friends. During the 6th Annual Summer FUN Convention Bill took a moment to show me some of his favorite coin and currency pieces from his collection. Bill's business motto is Hold History In Your Hands And indeed you can while viewing his rare numismatic collection

Bill earned his doctorate in counseling and rehabilitation from the University of Florida in 1975. He then took a job as a professor in Kentucky. Bill started his coin collection at the age of (9) nine. He began to build his coin collection as most youngsters did with Indian Head and Lincoln cents. Bill left the hobby for a period of time. Then one day in 1985 he pulled out his Indian Head cent collection and it revitalized his interest in the hobby. He bought the 1877, 1872, and 1909S finally finishing the set in 1987.
In 1987 he opened Old Kentucky Coin and operated that business until 2002. Bill then retired and moved to Florida. The golden years of retirement left him bored. He missed the numismatic hobby & his coins. So in 2004 he reopened his shop under the name of Patriot Rare Coins & Currency in Florida. His specialty is coppers, early type coins, colonial currency, and obsolete currency .

Buy The Book Before The Coin
A word of advice which appears near the end of my conversation with Mr. Weikel, is Buy The Book Before The Coin. This phrase is uttered by most if not all of the professional numismatic dealers I've had the pleasure of interviewing. It is important to take the time to research the era of coin or currency you desire to collect. As reading and studying your area of numismatic interest will help you comprehend and appreciate the pieces within that era or series.
