The Great Depression & The American Hobo

The Great Depression & The Hobo

FUN's theme for the January, 2013 Convention is “Buffalo and Hobos A Centennial Celebration.” 2013 marks the 100th Anniversary of the first striking of the very popular Buffalo Nickel. Soon after this initial striking, homeless artisans referred to as “hobos,” began carving intricate designs on the Buffalo Nickels. These unique artistic coins were used as payment for food, water or lodging. These items became known to collectors as “Hobo Nickels.”

During the great depression teenage Hobos roamed across America in search of work. Most Hobos left their homes searching for a better life. Many felt they were a burden to their families, ashamed of their unfortunate circumstances. By the 1930’s the Hobo became a part of America, male and female "hobos" could be seen on the streets & throughout the countryside. Hobos were kind people roaming America in search of work or adventure.

The video series below depicts The Great Depression. Several episodes touch on the American Hobo, riding the rails in search of work during the financial crisis

Season 1, Episode 7: Arsenal of Democracy
By 1939 Americans were still struggling to end the Great Depression. Their dreams of peace and prosperity were celebrated at World's Fairs in New York and San Francisco. However, prosperity did not come in peacetime. Millions fled the "dust bowl" states to finally find work in new defense industries. While the New Deal changed America forever, it was war that ended the Great Depression. When world famous socialist author Upton Sinclair runs for governor of California, his platform provides an alternative to capitalism and tests the limits of the New Deal. Ironically, one year after Sinclair's defeat, President Roosevelt signs the Social Security Act, a move that signals the beginnings of a modern welfare state.
