Scouting For Coins At 2012 FUN Show

Sadly, I was late to the Boy Scout Clinic. I snapped a few shots of the class and quietly zoomed in on a few of the Scouts as they happily held up their coins.

Thankfully, I met a few of the boys at the Young Numismatists class and stumbled into a few more on the bourse floor.

I am always surprised to learn how far our Scouts travel to attend The Boy Scout Merit Badge Clinic. I had the pleasure of speaking to Reid, Zachary & Logan who represented Troop 541 Gulf Ridge Council, Haines City, Florida and Troop 692 from Casselberry, Florida.

I had a great time learning what was in Cloud & Skyler's goodie bags. Both boys belonged to pack 528. While James was not in uniform he too was representing pack 528 and having some FUN with his friends and fellow pack mates.

Merit Badge Folder

Many collectors will tell you they got their start in the numismatic world through the Boy Scouts merit badge. The merit badge folder offered by Wizard Coin Supply is ideal for the Boy Scout who wants to earn this special badge. A perfect introduction into the world of coin collecting, boys earning this badge must be able to explain common terminology, grading terms, and tour a United States Mint facility, as well as start his own collection. The Whitman folder for coin collecting is designed specifically with the Boy Scout in mind, with all of the necessary information needed to earn the merit badge, plus slots to collect the required coins.

For those attending Summer FUN you can purchase the Merit Badge Folder and other tools of the trade from Wizard Coin Supply. Wizard will be at TABLE #627 on the bourse floor.

The Coin Designs

The obverse (heads side) design depicts a Cub Scout in the foreground with a Boy Scout and female Venturer in the background saluting. Inscriptions are CONTINUING THE JOURNEY, 1910, 2010, IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY. This design represents the Boy Scouts of America of today, as the organization has recognized the need to include other programs for younger boys (cub scouts) and older boys and girls (venturers), reflecting the great diversity of our nation. It is a dramatic representation of how the Boy Scouts of America has evolved over the past century to form a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for all the youth of America.

The reverse (tails) design features the Boy Scouts of America's universal emblem. Inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA, BE PREPARED, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR.

Both designs were approved by Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner on September 16, 2009, at the recommendation of the United States Mint, after consultation with the Boy Scouts of America and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, as well as review by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

Girl Scouts Have Some FUN With Money!

The ratio of Boy Scouts to Girl Scouts at the FUN Show is surely lacking, 99% to 1%? I would like to correct that by encouraging more Girl Scouts to get involved in coin collecting. C'mon! It isn't just for boys! There are Women in Numismatics. Make it The Hobby of Kings Queens!

This year I had the pleasure of talking to the young ladies from Troop 704 out of Davenport, Florida. Elisha, Aaliyah, Emily, & Abigail were more than happy to Show Me The Money they had found in their goodie bag. :)

Later in the day I found Emily and Elisha teaming up for some Gold panning action. I don't know if they scored a nugget or not. But they looked like they were having some FUN shaking the pans for their gold treasure.

By the time the Merit Badge Program was in full swing, I felt like I knew Abigail. I had met her that morning during the Young Numismatists Meeting. I walked down to the bourse floor with Abigail, Brooke and Grace to watch the Spider Press demonstration.
