$500,000 Gold Coin Treasure Found In Abandoned Storage Unit
Storage Wars a popular reality television show broadcast on A & E features Dan and Laura Dotson of American Auctioneers. Dan and Laura were interviewed not long ago about a treasure consisting of Gold Doubloons worth $500,000 found in one of the storage lockers they auctioned off. The lucky buyer, known only as John, is from San Jose. He bought the unit for just $1,000.
[quote from Dan's Twitter Account on treasure]
"We had no idea!" said auctioneer Dan Dotson via Twitter.
"We only heard from the excited buyer and storage facility owner! Great find of a lifetime.
It certainly is! Sadly, this numismatic find was not featured on the television show Storage Wars.
Storage Wars has a viewing audience of 4.7 million. It is so popular a spin off of the show was recently created and is being taped in Texas. Both programs auction off foreclosed lockers without bidders knowing what's inside.
The sale discussed in the news clips above took place outside of San Francisco, California. This "treasure chest" contained pieces of Spanish gold thought to date back to the 16th and 19th centuries.
Dan and Laura Dotson have been making appearances on various news outlets regarding this rare find. Storage Wars has certainly increased public interest in the auctioning of abandoned storage unites. This will certainly increase awareness and interest in the show and the business of purchasing storage lockers at auction.
TMZ Reports
Dan and Laura Dotson came across the stash inside a foreclosed storage locker at an auction in Contra Costa County, CA which they sold off for just over a grand.
The Dotson's discovered the pirates booty after auctioning off the locker a small treasure an expert described as "Pieces of Eight Spanish Gold," dating anywhere between the 16th and 19th century.
According to one source, the coin box was so heavy it took 3 people to move it out of Storage. We're told an appraisal expert valued the collection at around $500,000. Yo ho ho!

It's the creepiest jackpot ever a recent bidder on "Storage Wars" paid $400 for a bunch of crap, including an old trunk which contained a shocking $24,000 in cash. But for some reason, none of the bills had faces on them.
In case you're unfamiliar the A&E show features auctions in which people bid on the abandoned contents of large storage lockers ... but they only get a few seconds to see what's inside.
Laura Dotson who runs the auction company for the show with her husband Dan tells TMZ, the buyer paid the $400 for the locker and soon after, discovered the MOUNTAIN of cash inside the trunk.
The eerie part: Whoever owned the trunk beforehand drilled the faces out of every single bill. It's unclear why, but we're told the money was still considered legal tender despite losing face.
U.S. Treasury Fun Fact -- A bank will accept bills with the faces cut out ... if the both serial numbers are still in tact and the bills pass a series of tests.

An Overview of the Morgan Dollar The Morgan dollar was a United States dollar coin minted intermittently from 1878 to 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar minted since production of the previous design, the Seated Liberty dollar, ceased due to the passage of the Fourth Coinage Act, an act which also ended the free coining of silver. The coin is named for its designer, United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan.
