Counterfeiter's paradise: Indian gold $2.50, $5 favorites Via @CoinWorld
The Indian Head gold $2.50 quarter eagles and half eagles have been favorites of counterfeiters for as long as I have been working as an authenticator. Something about the incuse design causes problems for many collectors when they attempt to identify fakes - even veteran numismatists and dealers have trouble with these pieces at times. Due to this, my advice to collectors has always been to look for depressions and tool marks on the surfaces of a questionable example.

Police are scratching their heads over a suspect in Park Hills. According to officers, the man attempted to sell back stolen coins to the business they were stolen from. In February, 29-year-old Jeffrey Hedricks broke into Ken's Cards and Coin store, a collectible card and coin shop in downtown Park Hills. He reportedly stole a case of coins. "Mostly silver coins, anywhere from 20 dollars to 200," said owner Ken Mosier. "There were 90 coins in the case because I'd just filled it up the day before he broke in."

In all, the coins were valued between $1,500 and $1,700. A surveillance camera caught an image of the burglar but it wasn't until a month later that a tip led police to the Hedricks. Detectives say he confessed. Hedricks had reportedly returned to the store, selling one of his remaining stolen coins back to Ken himself. "I asked him about the coins, where are the coins at," said detective Mike Kurtz. "He told me he'd traded all the coins off for dope, except one of the coins."

Japan’s vending machines no match for counterfeit coins
Japan’s vending machines no match for counterfeit coins TOKYO Counterfeit coins and bills are hard to make and with the advancement of technology, hard to pass for genuine money. Store clerks are armed with a variety of techniques, from special pens to knowledge of watermark placement, making it even more difficult for those looking for undeserved cash to score big. However, with the proliferation of vending machines across Japan and the circulation of a high-value 500 yen coin, counterfeiters have a perfect mark for cashing in their fake coins, as a recent photo on Twitter confirms.

No, not an unbelievably valuable mint-made error coin, this intentionally-made disc is able to fool vending machines by possessing the same weight, shape, and outer design as a genuine 500 yen coin.
