Long Time No See
Taemin had been watching Jongin for a while now. His best friend was too absorbed in his dance routine to catch Taemin’s reflection in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors. It was the same routine Taemin had danced with Jongin two months ago - Taemin just for fun, to get a break from all of SHINee’s routines he had had to learn, while Jongin had been more serious about it. After all, Jongin had no band yet and no songs of his own.
Taemin was happy to see that Jongin had gotten a lot better. He was a pleasure to watch. And even though they had sent each other messages and pictures every day, there was something about Jongin that had not come through in the pictures. Jongin was looking a lot taller than the last time Taemin had seen him - more manly somehow, as well. Or maybe Taemin was just more aware of it now.
“Hi?” Taemin finally said when the song ended and Jongin sat down on the floor.
Jongin jolted and wheeled around. His wide eyes finally met Taemin’s.
“Taemin!” he exclaimed, bursting into relieved laugh and clambering to his feet.
Jongin pulled Taemin into a tight hug, one that made Taemin tense a little and wonder if Jongin had always been like this.
“I thought you were a girl!” Jongin said, studying Taemin’s long hair.
Taemin grinned. “Are you disappointed I’m not?”
“No, no,” Jongin said absent-mindedly. He reached out and took a strand of Taemin’s hair between his fingers. “Is this real?”
Taemin snorted. “What do you think?”
He noticed that he had to tilt his chin up to look at Jongin’s face. Jongin had grown so much in a few months that it was ridiculous - and Taemin felt kind of envious of him.
“Wanna go and eat something?” Jongin asked then.
Taemin would’ve wanted nothing better. “Yeah, let’s go.”
Walking through the SM building and catching up with each other, it was as though these months hadn’t even passed between them. Some things were different, of course: Taemin had seen a bit more of the world again, and, besides growing taller, Jongin had become a better dancer. But Jongin did not seem to envy Taemin’s success that had grown because of Lucifer - and Taemin was thankful for that.
They stepped out to the street, and Taemin pulled his beanie on, wishing he’d avoid getting recognised that way. Jongin saw it and snickered. He threw his arm around Taemin and pulled him close.
“Yah!” Taemin chuckled, pushing Jongin away.
“What?” Jongin asked.
“People’ll think we’re a couple.”
“Why? ‘Cause you’re so pretty?” Jongin teased.
Taemin felt his cheeks burn. Luckily it was too dark for Jongin to see it. Jongin had said he was pretty.
“Yeah, and you’re this big burly man now and you make me look even smaller,” Taemin retorted.
“Fine! I won’t do it again,” Jongin replied. Then he stopped and stared at Taemin.
“What?” Taemin asked.
Jongin reached out his hands again and fixed Taemin’s bangs and his beanie. Now Jongin could certainly feel how hot Taemin’s cheeks were. But truth be told, Taemin kind of liked Jongin’s attention. Out of all the people who had played with Taemin’s hair lately, he liked Jongin the most. In the same way, there weren’t many people whose opinions mattered to Taemin anymore. Jongin’s was one of those that did.
“There. Let’s go,” Jongin said when he had finished. “What shall we have? Jajangmyeon?” Jongin asked, pointing at a restaurant.
“Can you buy it for me?” Taemin asked.
Jongin grimaced at him. “Yah, you’re the one making money!”
Taemin shrugged and grinned. “It can’t hurt asking. Since I’m so pretty and everything…”
They stared at each other.
“Fine, I’m buying,” Taemin moaned finally, and they both burst out in laughter.
