Madeline was curled up with her back pressed to Ling's chest, his arm draped over her and her hand resting on top of his. It had been just recently that they had gotten Shen-Li to sleep in his own bed, and when she had laid down for bed that night, Madeline had fallen asleep almost immediately, much to Ling's disappointment

Shen-Li stared at Ling for a moment longer before pressing his face back against his chest. "Mommy was crying, and I didn't like it,"

"I don't like when your mother cries either," Ling said softly.

"You can't make Mommy cry, okay Daddy?"

"Shen-Li..." Madeline sighed and rubbed his back. "It was just a dream, your Daddy wouldn't ever make me cry..."

"Of course I wouldn't," Ling said reassuringly.

"Okay," Shen-Li said quietly, his eyes sliding closed as he fell asleep.

Madeline sighed again and reached out to touch Ling's face. "I love you,"

"I love you too," Ling murmured, laying back down onto the bed, Shen-Li resting on his chest.

"I hope he doesn't keep having those dreams," she said softly. "I didn't want to have to think about all that again..."

Ling reached out and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "Neither do I," he said, "You know I feel guilty enough, leaving you like that."

Madeline smiled and turned her head to kiss his hand. "You didn't have a choice," she said softly. "I know you wouldn't have for any other reason."

"And I will never leave you again," he said, with an air of finality.
