Julian was curled up against Nick's side, the two of them laying haphazardly in the treehouse that was quickly becoming too small for both of them. In the back of his mind he realized it was a good thing they had gotten this close, and were able to lay close together

"But Mom... she'd want me to be strong and not cry..."

"You can cry when you're around me, okay? I won't tell."

At that, Julian burst into tears again and buried his face in Nick's neck, clinging to the other boy as he sobbed.

Nicolas clung to the other boy tightly, squeezing his eyes shut to hold back his own tears.

"I-I don't w-want her to die," Julian mumbled helplessly. "I haven't gotten to be with her that long."

"I know, I know," Nicolas whispered, swallowing against the lump in his throat, "She doesn't want to leave you either..."

"D-Dad and Mom always told me this could happen, but I never thought... Never thought it would,"

Nicolas stayed silent, his hands moving back and forth on Julian's back comfortingly.

Exhaused from crying so hard, Julian sagged against the pillows and Nicolas, lifting his hand to wipe at his tears. "P-promise that you'll hold my hand, if...?"

"I'll always hold your hand," Nicolas said softly.
