Julian was curled up against Nick's side, the two of them laying haphazardly in the treehouse that was quickly becoming too small for both of them. In the back of his mind he realized it was a good thing they had gotten this close, and were able to lay close together

"Mmm, I don't know," Nick murmured, idly running his fingers through Julian's hair, "People have souls, they have to go somewhere, right?"

"Yeah, but where? They don't just... float around forever, right?" He asked, clutching at the other boy. "That would be sad..."

"Then there'd be a lot of ghosts around. I'm sure they go somewhere. Why're you asking, anyway?"

"My mom... She's really sick this time... I think she might..."

Nicolas swallowed thickly and held Julian even tighter. He didn't want to think about his grandmother dying either. That would be bad enough, but it would break Julian's heart and then Nick would have be there to hold him while he cried and the thought of Julian crying made Nick want to cry too.

"Grandma's tough," he said weakly, "I'm sure she'll be fine."

"I-I know, but... when she gets this way, and she coughs... There's always so much blood..." Julian whispered, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried not to keep from crying.

Nick ran his hands up and down Julian's back and sighed shakily. "Shh, shh, it'll be okay," he whispered, trying to comfort the younger boy.

Julian took a deep, shuddering breath and wrapped both his arms around Nick tightly. "I'm sorry," he whispered, burying his face against Nick's chest. "I should try and be stronger..."

"I-it's okay," Nick stuttered, "You know I'd be the same if it was my mom."

Despite how hard he had his eyes closed, Julian could feel tears beginning to seep into the fabric of Nicolas' shirt, and he clung more tightly to the other boy. "I'm so scared..."

Nicolas choked back his own tears and hugged Julian fiercely. "You'll be okay, I promise. Even if everyone else was gone, we'd still have each other."
