"Experience is not what happens to a man; it is what a man does with what happens to him." -- Aldous Huxley

There was a time when Dean wanted nothing more that to kill things and rescue pretty girls from monsters that projectilely vomited venomous spit. It was a time when every third girl was a conquest and his only worry was whether he could outrun the biker he'd just hustled. It was the family business, Winchester and Sons, until Sam ran off to college and it became Winchester and Son.

Dean could never figure out how John could so easily tell Sam to leave until his Dad was dying and he and Sam were the only ones left and it was just Winchester Sons. Their Dad was only doing what he thought was best for Sam, making sure he had a way out of the life, making sure he could have a normal life, the life he and Dean both knew Dean would never have. Even if he wanted it.

Sitting in the Impala, blood dripping across his cheek, palms pressed against the steering wheel and Black Sabbath blasting too loud out of the speakers, Dean realized he was alone. It wasn't Winchester and Sons anymore, it wasn't Winchester Sons anymore, it was Dean.

He had sold his soul for his brother, been to hell and back for his brother, he'd practically raised Sam... and Sam had walked away from him.

Again.

"Are you sure?" Elle asked quietly as the tape changed songs and she leaned over to wipe the blood off his face. He knew it was the only time she would ask him and he nodded. Dean was alone and the only way to save Sam was to bring his brother back.

Throwing the car into gear and pulling out onto the highway, Dean nodded. He was sure -- it was his mission from God after all.

Too bad Dean didn't believe in God.
