"I didn't say you could come here."

He's here anyway, poised on the sill of her window, and he thinks he can see the moon reflecting in her eyes. She's standing by the bed, with her nightgown askew and her hair wild and crimson over her shoulder; she's holding a bat, a bat he knows that she's covered with wolfsbane powder, let it sunk into the wood until it's pulsing with poison, but she doesn't seem to be keen on swinging it. Instead, she's holding it outstretched, like a warning - he thinks he should be pleased getting a warning at all, considering there is a wolf climbing in her room at night.

"Do you make a habit of coming into people's rooms without permission?" she hisses, though her hands never waver. "This is private property. My father's, to be precise, but I doubt he'd be any happier knowing that you're here."

"We need to talk," Derek tells her, and her expression tightens and then releases, all within a fraction of a second.

She takes a step towards the bed, and the bat lowers a bit. "You have two minutes."

"You know there's an Alpha pack in town," he starts.

"I've heard the rumors," she snaps. "Nice of you to tell me yourself now, after the threat's arrived."

He probably deserves that one; he's let her hang out to dry, a potential target without a guard, though looking at her now, senses alert and ready to pounce, maybe she doesn't need one.

"They might come after you. I'm sure Peter's told them... well. Everything, maybe."

"What does everything include?" she asks.

"Nothing good," he replies.

The bat is set down on the bed, and she curls her fingers towards her palm, like she's getting kinks out of the digits. "Why would they want me?"

"With your immunity, you can be used for a lot of things."

Her eyes flash, gold and dangerous. "I'm not a tool," she says, and he isn't sure if she's speaking to him or herself, remnants of Peter's ghost dancing through her mind.

"They won't care," he warns.

"So what," she laughs, and smooths a wrinkle in her nightgown, "you're going to protect me?"

He isn't sure how to proceed; it's different when the offer doesn't come with the perks. Lydia will get none of the strength and speed the others have, but he hopes there's still enough incentive to pull her in.

"You can be pack," he says, finally, "and you'll have it."

"I can't be turned."

Derek shrugs. "Sometimes there are humans in packs. To be honest, you'll be an asset no matter what. I could use someone with an eye for strategy and tactics."

"What will I be?" Lydia asks. "A beta? Your beta?"

"I don't know," Derek says, honestly. "I don't know what you are."

This seems to please her - she never reacts the way he thinks she will. She muses on this for awhile, and the seconds tick away from the small clock on her dresser. Derek can hear them echoing in his ears. Finally, she tucks an errant hair behind her ear and stands up again; from the sharp, taut line of her shoulders, he gathers she's made a decision.

"Fine," she says, curtly, with finality. "But you aren't choosing me. I'm choosing you."

It seems fair, considering she should, by all rights, be with Peter. "Okay."

She stalks towards him, and he feels acutely uncomfortable. She has a way about her that sets him a little off, a step behind, like he can't find his footing. She moves like Kate, without the inherent psychotic, homicidal urges - like a woman who knows exactly who she is and isn't afraid to embrace it. This should rattle him more than it does, given everything.

Her hand presses against his shoulder. He should push her away, because technically he's her Alpha now, but he doesn't.

"So," she says, and purses her lips together. "How do we seal the deal?"

"Usually, there's a bite."

"Well, since that won't work," she tells him, and laughs right up until the moment their mouths touch. He can feel the trembles of the action through his lips as they subside. It lasts far longer than it should, and not nearly long enough. By the time they part, his hand has found its way to her hair, fingers wrapped around curled strands.

"If the Alpha pack comes sniffing around..." Derek starts.

Lydia smiles, feral and wide. "Don't worry. I'll just tell them that I'm already taken."
