The sharp rap at the front door jerked Derek out of his reverie as he read an essay from one of his students at Beacon Hills High. He rolled his shoulder to work the kinks out of them as he rose from his chair.
He could see a sheriff's deputy on his front porch through the thin curtain over the window and his mouth went dry. The memory of the last time someone from the Beacon Hills sheriff's office showed up to greet him flashed through his mind unbidden before he could tamp down on them and take a deep breath.
He steeled himself and opened the door slowly, prepared for the worst.
"Evening Mr Hale," the young deputy on his porch greeted him. His hand was resting on his nephew Jacob's shoulder who had an expression on his face that was a mix of annoyance and fear. "I hear this one belongs to you?"
"My sister," Derek corrected as he raised an eyebrow at Jacob.
"I didn't mean to!" The eight-year-old burst out before Derek could say a word.
"Go inside and I'll talk to the officer unless he needs you for anything else," Derek replied. Before Jacob could bolt inside he turned to the deputy who crouched down to his level.
"I'll go easy on you if you promise not to tell on me," the deputy bargained with Jacob. He crooked his pinky and held it out as a promise. Jacob eyed him for a second but then hooked his own finger around the officer's and they "shook" on their deal.
"Stay out of the cookies, we're eating as soon as your mother gets home!" Derek called after him as he ran inside the house.
Derek stepped out onto the porch and pulled the door almost closed behind him. "What's going on Deputy... uh. Oh. Stilinski?" Derek asked as his gaze fell on the officer's name tag slowly. The memory of another, older deputy with a sad smile streaked by soot flashed through Derek's mind.
"Yeah, can't really escape that connection. I was hired after my dad retired," the deputy explained with a half smile.
"I met your dad once," Derek replied vaguely. "Good guy."
Deputy Stilinski nodded. "Yeah, he is."
"What's going on with Jacob, Deputy Stilinski?" Derek asked, turning back to the matter at hand.
The deputy nodded and cleared his throat. "I found him a few streets away from the school playground about a half hour ago. The bus already left so I said I'd bring him home. We already had a talk about wandering away from the school and I think being brought home in a cop car freaked him out."
Derek sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Did he say what he was doing so far from school or why he walked off the grounds? And what did you two pinky swear on?"
Deputy Stilinski's face reddened as if he were embarrassed and he shuffled his feet. "That's all answerable with one answer: Pokemon Go."
Derek stared at the Deputy for a long moment, taking in his awkwardly hesitant expression as if he were waiting for Derek to explode at him.
It was kind of adorably endearing.
"Pokemon Go," Derek repeated. "Jacob left school grounds to... uh, find--"
"A hitmonlee! Er, in his defence. And mine?" Derek just had to raise an eyebrow and the Deputy flushed an even deeper red. "I had a break and in that area anyway so--"
Derek held his hand up with a small smile. "Thank you for bringing Jacob back, Deputy Stilinski."
"Stiles."
"Pardon?"
The deputy chuckled. "It's my name. Can't get more embarrassing at this point."
Jacob appeared behind Derek again with a cell phone to his ear. "Uncle Derek, mom wants me to tell you to put your tongue back in your mouth. What does that mean, uncle Derek?"
Derek could hear Laura laughing her ass off on the other end of the call and Stiles covered his own snort with a cough directed into his upper arm. It was Derek's turn to feel his cheeks burn and he quickly turned Jacob around and pushed him back inside.
"Tell your mother to mind her own business," he called after his nephew loudly enough for Laura to hear.
"I guess it can get more embarrassing. Sorry about that," Derek said when he turned back.
Stiles shrugged. "Not a problem. Anyway, now that Jacob's home and safe I guess I'll get back to it." He started to turn away from Derek to leave but Derek heard a voice in his head chastise him.
"Good luck with your, uh. Pokemon-ing," Derek said quickly, then winced at how lame that sounded.
But Deputy Stil--Stiles turned around and gave him a brilliant grin. "Thanks! You should get Jacob to take you out on a hunt some time."
Derek took a deep breath and then said in a rush, "Maybe the three of us could go?"
Stiles' grin got impossibly wider and he reached into his breast pocket for a business card. He pulled a pen out of his pocket and scribbled something on the card before handing it over to Derek.
"Call me. Uh, for Pokemon hunting. With your nephew," Stiles said in an awkwardly halting manner.
"You bet," Derek replied and this time let Stiles walk off the porch and to his cop car. Before he got in he cast one more glance back at Derek who waved at him.
Once Stiles drove away he turned around to find Jacob staring up at him with a very "Laura" expression on your face.
"I won't be able to go Pokemon hunting with you if mom grounds me."
"You're too much like your mother," Derek grumbled as he shut the door.
