"Why are you here? What the hell are those?"

Stiles pushed past Derek, who had opened the door and greeted him with a half-horrified, half-confused look, and carefully put all of his things on the floor.

"Stiles, what's going on?" Derek asked, closing the door with a resigned sigh.

"I'm a single dad and I got stuck babysitting for the night. I can't handle three babies on my own and I knew you'd be home. Help me," Stiles pleaded, knowing he probably looked deranged with his messy hair and panicked expression.

Derek looked down at the things on the floor and bent down, picking up a bundled up baby with one hand, letting it dangle in front of his face by the arm. Stiles cursed and rushed forward, snatching the baby away gingerly and cradling it, praying it didn't start crying.

"Stiles, what the hell?" Derek exclaimed, staring at him worriedly.

"It's a health class project!" Stiles spat out. "They're those stupid computer babies that mimic the patterns of a real baby."

The baby in Stiles' arms whimpered a couple times and he froze, staring down at it in horror. He bundled it close to his chest and started rocking it, deliberate in how he moved.

"Why do you have three of them?" Derek asked, peering down at the other two, one swaddled in a blue blanket that looked incredibly soft and another in a yellow fabric that could have been a shirt.

"It's date night," Stiles explained while rolling his eyes. "This one," he continued, nodding to the one in his arms. "Is Scott's with Kira. That one," he waggled his foot at the one in the soft blue. "Is Lydia's with Danny. And the other one is mine."

"Who's your partner?"

Stiles frowned. "I was late to class because I was talking with Coach about lacrosse and the odd man out. I'm a single dad. And wouldn't you know it, my kid is the easiest one out of the three."

"That can't be right," Derek replied teasingly but at Stiles' dark look Derek put his hands up. "Sorry."

Stiles sighed. "It's fine, just please say you can help me out tonight."

As if on cue Lydia's baby started making a fuss and Stiles felt his eye start to twitch. Derek stooped down and scooped both babies up, arranging them both in his arm comfortably and it looked...

"Natural," Stiles grumbled. "How in the hell are you so good at that?"

"I helped mom out with Cora when she was born and there were a few younger cousins around a lot," Derek replied, bouncing up and down gently with the babies.

As if to complain about his own caregiver Scott's baby whimpered again once, then started full-out wailing. Stiles cursed and wanted to cry with him.

"I think it's time for a change for Lydia's," Stiles said over the noise. "You have to go through all the motions of changing him and re-swaddle him when you're done. There are bottles in the bag if they're needed," Stiles instructed and Derek moved easily, grabbing the bag from the floor and taking the babies to the kitchen island. Stiles watched in awe at how easily Derek unwrapped the blanket and went through the act of changing the doll.

Stiles paced back and forth to the living room area, trying to mimic the light bouncing Derek had down with Scott's doll. By far Scott's had been the most problematic during this class lesson.

"Here," Derek said a few minutes later, passing Stiles his own baby and switching out for Scott's.

Stiles breathed a sigh of relief and grabbed all three bottles from the kitchen before joining Derek on the couch where he settled with Lydia's quiet doll and Scott's devil-child.

"Why'd you get stuck with all of them?" Derek asked when Stiles returned to settle beside him. Lydia's doll was perched on his right shoulder as he rocked Scott's in his left arm, making his muscles bulge and relax in an entirely too-distracting way for Stiles.

"Lydia already had plans before this class came up, Danny got a date and gave me puppy eyes. Scott and Kira are celebrating the first time they kissed or met or went out to dinner or something, I don't know. Next thing you know I'm the built-in pack babysitter," Stiles grumbled. "I already know I'm unprepared for parenthood, couldn't I have just signed something?"

"I did the project with an egg," Derek said in a quiet voice, staring down at the fake baby in his arm. "Much quieter."

"I bet," Stiles replied, watching how soft Derek's expression was as he looked down at the doll. He reached for the TV remote and turned on something inane and soothing as he relaxed info the couch.

And maybe a little into Derek's side.

***

The TV was shut off when Stiles woke up, coming to quickly when he felt the buzz of his phone in his pocket. It was a text from Danny saying his date was done, he could pick up his baby with Lydia.

Stiles looked over at Derek who was also fast asleep with a baby cradled to his chest in each arm. He typed out a quick reply for Danny to come first thing in the morning to Derek's.

He pulled the throw off the back of the couch and draped it over their legs, then settled against Derek's warm arm. He was asleep again within minutes and so missed Derek rousing, readjusting his hold on the babies and wrapping his arm around Stiles' shoulders.
