Stiles used his butter knife to help corral the last of his peas onto his spoon, before shoveling them into his mouth with a wag of his eyebrows at his younger cousin. Allison had disliked peas since her mother purred them for her as a baby and Stiles always made a show of how much he loved his peas. Much to his Aunt Vicki’s disdain, Allison, like always, pouted because she knew she was not getting out of eating her vegetables.

“Allison, don’t sulk at the table. This is Stiles last dinner with us, for a while, don’t let him remember you as a spoiled child.” Stiles had long since stopped thinking his Aunt Vicki was the cold woman she sounded. She just had a different way of showing affection.

Allison just pouted that much harder smashing her peas with the back of her spoon. “But, I don't want Stiles to go.”

“Ah, Allygator. I’m going to miss you too, squirt,” Stiles placed his flatware on his plate, following table etiquette that his Aunt had drilled into him, “but we talked about how I have to go where Mom does.”

Allison moved on to adding mashed potatoes to her smashed peas, making a vomit looking mess all over her plate. “I don’t see why you have to go. You’re always here all the time.

Stiles was about to explain to Allison again why he was leaving, only to have his Uncle Chris cut him off, “Stiles why don’t you take your plate into the kitchen and wash up. Allison finish your plate please.”

Stiles nodded to his Uncle and gathered up everything, heading into the kitchen. Squeezing some soap on a sponge, Stiles washed the plate clean before stacking it into the dishwasher. Dinner with at his Aunt and Uncle’s was like night and day compared to when his mother was in town and he was back home with her. Aunt Victoria ruled her kitchen with an iron fist. Everything had a spot, and was so clean, Stiles wouldn't doubt a Sunset magazine photo spread could be down in here at the drop of a hat. Where his mother was more the take-out-pizza-left-on-the-counter-for-breakfast-the-next-day kind of person. The condiments were all from fast food places and the dishes were all paper.

Though Stiles never once thought his mother didn’t love him. After all Kate Argent chose to be his mother. It was about the only thing she stood up to her father about.

Stiles was loading the last pan in the dishwasher when Allison came in and placed her plate in the sink. Stiles stepped aside as Allison soaped up and raise off her dish in silence. “You know Allygator, I am just a phone call away.”

“I know,” Allison’s voice was almost drowned out by the water.

“And there is always vacations. And next year I graduate and can go where I want.”

“Yeah, but you'll probably go to college.” Stiles didn’t think college was in his future. For one it wasn’t like there was a college course on werewolf hunting. Let alone the fact that Gerard Argent wouldn’t see a reason for paying tuition for a non Argent. No matter what his adoption papers said.

“Hey what did I say about borrowing trouble?”

Allison frown a bit, “Don’t go borrowing it.” Stiles felt once corner of his mouth lift in slightly. He still heard his real father tell him that when Stiles mind jumped to too many grimm outcomes to whatever was on his mind. Don’t go borrowing trouble, Kiddo.

“Hey, go on up and get ready for bed, and I’ll ask Aunt Vicki and Uncle Chris if we can stay up an extra half hour and find out what happens to Big Dan and Little Anne.” Stiles watched Allison rush out of the kitchen before finishing up and setting the dishwasher to run.

Stiles couldn’t find Aunt Vicki, but did track down his Uncle in his study. “Hey Stiles, you’re packed and ready?”

“Yeah, took care of it this afternoon. I was just going to head up and finish out Where the Red Fern Grows with Allison.”

“Sure, but first I wanted to talk to you before your mom gets here.” Stiles nodded and took a set in a chair near his Uncle’s desk. “Stiles,” Uncle Chris begin and then paused, brow furrowed.

“Is something wrong?”

“No. I am just trying to find the best way to word what I am going to say. Stiles, do you know why we have kept the family business hidden from Allison?”

“Yes, you wanted to give her and normal childhood.”

“That is something I dearly wish, you could have had too. Your life has not been easy Stiles, but you turned out to be a good kid. You do well in school, and you excel at any training my father and sister throw at you.” Chris took a breath, drumming his fingers on his desk, “Maybe you try a little too hard for Gerald's approval.”

Stiles looked down, picking at the corner of his nail. “Look, I know Kate loves you. When she found you, in those woods … she didn’t leave your hospital. That was something she didn’t even do when our own mother was sick. But I sometimes think you try to hard to earn that. But Stiles you don’t. You never had to earn it with Victoria and me. And you don’t have to with your mother either.”

“Okay Uncle Chris.”

“Hell, I am botching this up. What I want to say is whatever happens in Beacon Hills, if my father or sister asks you to do something against the code that I taught you, something you do feel is right, don’t”

Stiles nodded. “Do you think something is going on that I haven’t been told?” Chris shook his head in the negative. Stiles knew the answer though. Neither his Uncle nor him would but it past Gerald to have a plot in place.

“Go up and finish that book with Allison. I don’t have the heart to go through Little Anne’s death again. But Stiles, you can always call me if you have any trouble.”
