He should have known.
In the height of the days of the Kanima, Derek’s pack was strong. Three young betas followed him into battle, and even as the threat of hunters and alphas loomed overhead, at the very least everything made sense.
Now, there was void. There was a Nogitsune inhabiting the body of a teenage boy- one he’d grown unexpectedly fond of in recent months- and his betas were gone. Two dead, one pushed aside for safety, and his little sister was back, but it wasn’t the same.
He wasn’t an alpha anymore. He couldn’t rebuild. And perhaps he had an ally in Argent, but it didn’t make up for a pack.
Derek had no right, nor any particular desire, to submit to Scott. After the boy had flat out refused to work with him so many times, refused to join his pack…Derek just couldn’t do it. He saw Scott as his brother. Scott saw Derek as the one he’d go to when he’d reluctantly admit that he needs help.
Fine. Derek could be there. He could help. He still wasn’t pack.
And then Stiles was Stiles again. For a moment, he allowed himself to believe it could get better. He believed that the peace would last while they rebuilt after all the chaos.
Derek fell to his knees- bullets in his chest, a long-dead hunter staring him down like he was the greatest fun she’d ever had.
