Derek was not sure how Stiles had managed to talk him and a few of his betas into being Deputies for his father but he had. He should have known his mate had a plan. He always had a plan, and when both Stiles and Lydia start to plan - well the world should be scared.
Derek wasn’t scared, in fact he was happy. He had a job that allowed him to use his physical attributes to help others stay safe. Stiles always rolled his eyes at him when he tried to explain.
To Stiles it was obvious - Derek was an Alpha, a Protector and his job was an extension of that. It was cute, and he should stop teasing his husband but it was too much fun. The truth is whilst they were more than happy to take on the mantle of pack Alphas - they had taken on an even more rewarding title - parents.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
It was definitely not an expected baby. It was a legend and so rare that the last known recording was before the printing press. It had to be an Alpha wolf and their true mate, who needed access to magic and the right alignment of the stars. Stiles had bitched at him out for the entire 60 days he’d been pregnant. Derek was thankful that his mate suffered a wolf’s pregnancy term and not a human one or he might not have kept ‘little Derek’ - no matter how fond Stiles might be of it.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Still there was one thing that neither of them would change and that is their daughter. She was the apple of their eyes and doted on by the whole pack. It was lucky that Stiles’ Internet business could be run from home. He couldn’t stand the idea of no one being there for little Laurel Claudia Hale. There was also the part where she was a baby werewolf and hadn’t quite learnt to control her shift. It was so cute in a supernatural way - she would sneeze and shift.
Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me.
What was making Derek’s heart swell with even more love than usual is the way that Stiles was singing to their cub. It was late and he was weary but watching his mate gently rock their little one whilst singing a lullaby was probably the best thing ever. He could literally feel his weariness and the pain of the domestic violence scene leaving his mind. They were always worse for the werewolves because the idea of hurting their mate literally made their wolves whimper.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can't I?
Stiles gently put their cub back down in the cot, and looked over at Derek blushing. Stiles was so silly in maintaining that he couldn’t sing, “Hey Sourwolf.”
Derek smirked, “All the betas agree you can’t call me that anymore.”
Stiles pouted, it was his first and favourite nickname for his husband. “And what should I call you?”
“Yours,” was the soft reply that had Stiles melt all over again.
“Always,” Stiles replied. He kissed his very own Alpha wolf. It would have gone further but then Laurel interrupted sexy times.
Stiles still adored her - and that must speak for the deep abiding love parents have for their cubs as he wasn’t even mad at missing sex with Derek.
Somewhere over the rainbow indeed ... If someone had told him he would be thinking that five years ago when he was a painfully shy Virgin he would have laughed at them and then probably smacked them in the face for teasing him.
