She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Her body hummed with anxiety, an irritating mix of nausea and apprehension.

This time would be different. It had to be.

She’d been repeating that line to herself for three weeks now, it wasn’t any more successful this time than it had been before. Four weeks ago she’d been able to deny that there was anything different about to happen; her family hadn’t moved yet and she’d spent the summer in blissful ignorance. Her father had sent her to live with her grandmother in Japan and she’d been able to escape the clusterfuck that was her life; no one there knew what she was or how dangerous she could be. She’d been safe and thankfully, she’d managed to avoid any incidents while she was there.

But now she was here, in Beacon friggen Hills; a literal beacon to everything supernatural. Rationally she knew they’d been brought here for a reason, that they had a higher purpose, but emotionally she was pissed off.

It had to be different, but it wouldn’t be. Hard to be a normal girl when your high school was at the mouth of hell.

Students pushed past her as she stood frozen outside the building; rushing past her laughing and chatting with friends, ignoring her. That was good. If everyone ignored her for the year maybe there wouldn’t be any problems. ’Their ignorance will get them killed’ the voice in the back of her head shouted. She pushed those thoughts away, true as they were. These people thought werewolves were the things that went bump in the nighttime; they were in for a rude awakening.

She sighed and took another deep breath, going through the calming techniques her grandmother had taught her. They didn’t work. Resigned, she pushed one foot in front of the other as she climbed the stone steps to the first day of what was going to be an interesting year.
