...to describe how epically disappointed I am in California right now.

Yeah, history was made last night, but we've still got our brand new Jim Crow laws. Jesus FUCK, what is WRONG with people?

Okay, so since I saw in one of the comments that you're not fully sure what's up with the whole deal, I'll lay it out as I understand it.

Californians previously voted to outlaw gay marriage. That's sad and wrong, but it was legal.

The mayor of San Francisco decided to take matters in his own hands and declared gay marriage legal within the city of San Francisco. It didn't last, as the city is trumped by the state.

Then some liberal-leaning state Supreme Court justices declared the law unconstitutional, allowing gay marriage in the state, and all was good. The lesbians in my D&D campaign are married now, and the fiance and I are play-fighting each other for Spouse #1.

And then the churches got involved. Seems like they don't like being forced to marry people they don't recognize. But if that's the whole matter, why don't they just go the route the Catholics choose when refusing to marry divorcees?

Even though they could have totally taken the "don't ask don't tell" route of the military, churches (especially the Mormon church) poured money into the Yes on 8 campaign, using fearmongering ads about how schools were going to teach gay marriage, and the People were being undermined and OH MY GOD THE CHILDREN WILL BE ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS.

Opponents of No on 8 were underfunded, and even though they had supporters like Apple, Google, and Barack Obama, logic did not win this part of the campaign.

One of the saddest parts is that the news stations called Obama as the next president while folks in California were still in line for the polls. So they GOT OUT OF LINE because they were like, "My job is done." That is what hurt the most.

And finally, after my quick little sum-up, a tiny little ray of hope: Calif. gay marriage ban vote undecided
