Well I have been requested to update this journal and I guess I see why. Since my last post alot has happened I'm sure but I'll just hit the big points in what I hope to be an extremely long entry so it actually looks like I actually do this alot.
OK well I'm going to start with school. Now the first semester of my first year at college is over, with the expected results. I'm down alot of money, out of alot of time, just as smart as when I started, and all I have to show is a little printout with 2A's 4B's 1C and 3 Pass in Pass/Fail courses. I did well in most of my classes, and I got a C in bible only because I'm too lazy to study when there is a real exam. I think I like history and government more than anything, and I'd love to major in that but as far as I know there aren't any good jobs using those majors- since I don't want to be a teacher. My next option is business management, which of course could always change over the next 4 years. I just figured that since the big dogs of companys do the least work and get paid the most, thats the chair I want to be sitting in. No better way to get there than with a little meaningless piece of paper in my hands.
You would think I would give more value to a diploma, since it will end up costing me close to 50,000 dollars to get it, but I truly do not feel as though what I learn is worth my time. Common sense is what people need more of, rather than political correctness and "book knowledge." I have a real problem with idiots, and it seems like idiot are often the "smartest" people around. For instance, when I was working in Blacksburg this week for Andrew Corporation (which I will cover in the latter part of this entry) I had to move some desks and other office furnishings outside and load them onto a Penske truck, which I will also be covering later. I needed to get the door to the outside held open so I wouldn't have to fight the door with huge desks in my arms. An engineer with a 4 year degree and getting paid close to 80,000$ a year spent 5 minutes trying to fix the door mat to hold the door open, unsuccessfully of course. I, on the other hand, saw a yoplait yogurt cup laying in the bushes beside the door, and wedged it between the door and the sidewalk making a perfect doorstop. Redneck like me solves a simple problem with a simple solution, rather than trying to find a complicated solution for the same simple problem- Now whos the dumb one?
Ok back to my school. I met alot of new people since I started on my 'college experience', and it really shows you some of the differences in people. If there is one thing I truly hope to take from these 4 years of my life, its to be more of a "people person." I've met people from all across the country all of which have a different story, a different forte, and a different way of life. Sometimes variation is a good thing.
Next I will be talking about my friends that I've known before college, and often before Elementary school. All the guys on my airsoft team that I've grown up with and played these combat simulation games with are heading out to the forces. I almost feel proud, like I had a hand in training them for their career. 2 of BedSOG are now Army Rangers, 2 Marines, and about to have a Va Nat'l Guardsman- all from within the BedSOG ranks. All my guys are going to Iraq or the middle east now, it makes me nervous coming to the realization that yeah shit happens and I might not ever see them again. I don't like to think about that, and I don't think I will have to deal with that because I'd trust them all to cover my ass when my life is on the line. Hooah to the BedSOG boys- SSgt. Stanley
Sometimes I feel like I'm getting old. My friends are getting married, having kids, going off on their own life, and 2 others - heading down the wrong path. You know its weird, it seems like yesterday we were kids being kids, and now responsibility is dropped on us and we have no choice but to accept it and work with what we have. It seems like the other night we were partying having fun, then I had to see 2 of my friends faces on the 11 o clock news as most wanted. I'll never know what they were thinking- but I guess now they will have plenty of spare time to figure it out now.
Next comes Christmas I guess, which was good- better than most days of the year at least. I got most of the stuff I wanted - my MOLLE tactical vest, my Camelbak, and a few other tidbits that I'm sure nobody cares about. Oh and don't forget the clothes/socks/underwear, thats just a common occurance for me at least.
Around Christmas I started quite a few projects with my friend Tim- one of which is our new "war room." Fully decked out with all of our airsoft gear, explosives, and weapons- and a few nice posters of purty girls its a pretty cool place to be. We have a poker table in there if anybody likes to play, and hopefully we will be creating another room adjacent to the war room which will be named the "formal room," a more friendly environment to those unaccustomed to our redneck ways. It will be painted, well kept, and will house our poker table and our nice chairs that we just got, and will also have a refrigerator and possibly a microwave too. I'm sure if you know me good enough, you'll get a chance to see it. Even if I dont spend much time with you, it would be worth your time to check it out.
Also we have started a new Airsoft fort project, "The Burlap Sack Facility," which will be a huge maze of rooms put together to create a CQB arena (Close Quarters Combat) for plenty of action thats sure you make your butt pucker when you stick your head around the corner and you've got a guy 3 feet away with a gun that shoots 300 feet per second. By my count, that .01 seconds to get the hell out the way- How fast can you move? That will be a while to construct, I'll keep you posted.
Next I will be moving towards my job that I was mentioning earlier. I work at Andrew Corporation- an electronics factory that is responsible for the Geometrix wireless location systems for most cell phone providers. For those of you who do not know what this is- that means when you call 911 from your cellphone, the dispatcher can pinpoint your location in order to send help. Its a pretty good idea, and I'm proud to have a hand in it. Not to say that I actually work with the electronics all the time- I do mostly grunt work helping moving stuff such as the desks in the Blacksburg office and unloading/loading shipping trucks for stuff coming in and leaving the plant on the shipping dock. I like it, and as long as I'm out of school I am working 7-3:30 so 8 hours, 5 days a week makes deacent money.
About our little trip to Blacksburg to clear out their offices which are moving. My bossman who is a character in himself, rented a Penske moving truck. This truck was an automatic transmission with a governor to keep people from overwinding the engine. The truck had 6 gears, and would shift through 5th gear at 28 miles per hour, and 6th gear had to carry the rest of the way. You couldn't get the thing over 65 mph if it was falling from a tree. Its kind of hard to explain, but it was the most retarded thing I had seen in a while. If people could drive a stick right- there wouldn't be need for retarded automatics like that.
Well I'm nearing the present time so I will finish this shortly, after a brief message about more school. Since I'm about to start my second semester, which should be easy, my schedule is going to be messed up again. On a good note though, I get out of class at 10am on MWF, and 1pm and TR. It's pretty sweet I know. I guess there are benefits to only having 14 credit hours, but I will probably pay for it later when I'm pulling a 20 credit hour semester.
Ok well I've reached the conclusion of the summary of the last 4 months of my life, and I hope you all have enjoyed it. Now for the person who requested this update- I hope you enjoyed my little book, and if you request updates more like every 2 weeks then it will cut down on how much you have to read at one time :)
