Backing up an Android?

Backing up my iPhone is pretty much automatic with iTunes. It captures everything, apps, pics, preferences, music, contacts, etc. Is there an equivalent for the unrooted Android phones? I know a lot of people that recommend Titanium for rooted phones, but forestmaster does not intend to root her phone. Ideally I would like to sync everything in one location, but I do not know if there is a way to do that automatically, or to cover everything like apps and preferences. Yes, I know her contacts and calendars and other Google apps are already backed up "in the cloud", but we have had personal experience with another online mail service losing archived emails on their servers and are a bit paranoid about that sort of thing. I like having multiple physical backups in addition to online backups. Any thoughts or recommendations?
