I think more than that, they were really, really stupid. Which shouldn't be surprising, I guess. They were so brave when it came time to name the kids, but now they're all about the backpedaling. Take the swastikas down, watch a little history channel. Obviously, they hardly knew jack shit about Adolf Hitler to begin with.

What about the hospital? Didn't they do or say anything at all? No one thought maybe that was a bad idea? Any relatives? What kind of weird backwater is this?

I skimmed some comments to the article, and various people are making "slippery slope" proclamations that The Gubbiment is going to start taking kids away for having funny names. Obviously, if there was some risk of that, I might be a bit concerned, but I think that's ridiculous. If it were just Adolf, I might be more on the fence. But naming your kid Adolf Hitler is about as "quirky" as naming your kid "N*ggerbeater" or "Fuck You". You couldn't do it.

We filled out a form for a birth certificate. The state processed that. How did this not get found out then? I'm almost certain they catch if you put cuss words in the names.

I work with CPS, and they wouldn't take the kids away just because the parents gave them those names. Something else happened, or was discovered, they're just not saying what.

Yeah, one of the better articles I was able to find (oddly enough, on FoxNews.com) had a quote from a spokesperson from the government agency saying that they wouldn't do that based on the just the names. She also said that they wouldn't discuss specifics, and that quote made it into all the other sources. But she did say they don't take kids into custody just on the names.

I thought I read somewhere that the state wouldn't issue a birth certificate for obviously offensive names, like ones with cuss words in them for instance. I would think someone would get in trouble for a name like "Osama bin Laden" for instance. Of course, they'd probably also be subject to being shot by people that want to name their kids Hitler, so maybe that's a different issue.

I dunno what the rules are about naming kids- I guess that would be under the Bureau of Vital Stats? But I know that parents can do a lot of completely stupid-ass moronic things before it moves from 'bad parenting' to 'illegally bad parenting', which is when CPS can intervene. It generally takes a lot before CPS will actually remove the kids from the home; they'll usually try a lot of other options first (unless it's something really awful) before they go that route.

Of course, I only know about Texas CPS; it may be different elsewhere. But we're accused of being jackbooted thugs (ironically enough) about as often as we're accused of being worthless do-nothing bureaucrats. Which seems like a good balance to have, I suppose. :P
