Only if you buy Office 2004 for Mac. I don't think there's a built-in software to read powerpoints. You can purchase the office productivity suite that's designed straight for Macs, but in my experience, that one's a waste of money because it's not exactly compatible with Office (and the majority of the world-- i.e. your profs and other students-- would be using Office). In my experience, the best way to go is to just shell out money for Microsoft Office... your school might offer you an educational discount on the package, so check with them.
On Mac vs. PC, you might want to see what kinds of software you're going to need to use. Some of the stuff we used at Wellesley was only written for PCs-- like Hyperchem, which is the WORST SOFTWARE EVER. =_=;
