Language pet peeves

Mar 16, 2016 05:38

Sometimes I'm so easily peeved about phrases and other language stuff. I have CNN on a lot and there are phrases that get terribly overused. Older examples are "kicking the can down the road" and "boots on the ground" (What's your problem with "ground troops"?!).

From the primaries we got "moving/going forward" - well yeah, things will be from then on, as those things can't make a difference retroactively!
"I don't know that", when it should be "if" is an annoying new trend I've noticed. If you don't know that, then you couldn't even talk about it!
Something I've first noticed from that annoying sports reporter who's luckily gone now (Hey, enthusiasm is nice, but that woman was over the top with it and it felt as if the show was more about her than about sports.) is unfortunately something others do too: "Hillary Clinton, she won [some states]" (to use a very fresh example taken from the coverage of the 3rd Super Tuesday) puts a completely unnecessary comma into a sentence.
