i asked my friend that works at the dealership and he says:

scott (10:04:47 AM): first thing to try is pressing gently in the center of the fuel door while someone releases it
scott (10:04:53 AM): if it isnt making any noise, that's badtimes.
scott (10:05:18 AM): I would check to make sure the trunk release isnt locked out, because on some models that keeps the flap from opening..
scott (10:05:25 AM): if no noise is heard this wont apply
scott (10:05:44 AM): press gently in the center of the fuel door, sometimes they get warped and the release finger binds
scott (10:07:11 AM): if it makes noise, and the center of the door trick doesnt work
scott (10:07:42 AM): get something like a thin flathead screwdriver
scott (10:07:53 AM): and some electrical or masking tape
scott (10:09:38 AM): wind the tape around the tip of the screwdriver leaving about two nickle widths of metal exposed at the tip
scott (10:10:00 AM): (the tape is to keep it from marring the surface of the door or car when you pry)
scott (10:10:09 AM): it has to be a THIN SMALL flathead
scott (10:10:56 AM): anyhow, the makeshift prystick can be inserted in the trailing edge of the fuel door in the center, and the pin for the actuator can be pused back slightly, the door pried open without messing anything up

TA DA! Yay scott and his knowledge of VWs.

yeah, the button doesnt make any electrical noises and the trunk does work. i was going to call the closest dealership today to ask them what they think i should do and if they didnt suggest anything i was going to pry it open with a screwdriver. [i wouldnt have thought of wrapping it with electrical tape and would have regretted that hard core.]

thank you for going through the trouble to find out the best ways to fix it, youre such a doll.

ill keep you posted!
