a poem

my hands on the rotary dial
long after i have forgotten your name
still reach for you
in nervous memory
science tells me

that our emotions are affected by
harmonic tension and release
music a mathematical miracle
and beauty a cold calculation.

that i can measure the altitude of the midday sun
to pinpont your feet, set dead against mine
held only by that inexplicable pull
towards the center of the earth
where treasure and unspoiled monsters
await adventure.

but most immensly,
that an object set into motion will remain in motion
until acted upon by an unbalanced force.
this is the only law that moves me
as it explains
that complete loss of self-control that precedes
a soaring above the usual.
