Well I’m a little later with this than I’d have liked to have been but I am surrounded to the gills with essays if I had gills on my forehead. But it is nice to write something that doesn’t require quite as much…well…thought. No that’s not right, because I definitely over think this but…well…they’re my thoughts and not ones that need backing up with quotations referenced correctly in the
Chicago Manual of Style.
But this week, as a broadly sweeping statement, was possibly worse than last week. It was as if the contestants deliberately ignored all the brilliant songs that came out in the 80’s and instead we got some truly terrible choices. We’re nearly half way through the finalists and for them this process has now been going on for months. You can see they’re getting more and more tired and they’re making mistakes because of this. Not necessarily with their singing, more with being interesting. The gap is growing between those at the front and those at the back….and I mean talent and originality wise not popularity wise. Which leads us quite nicely to….
Danny:
Danny is doing everything in his power recently to make sure I don’t like him. And it is beginning to bug me. For the past few weeks he has stagnated. He filled that stage on Michael Jackson week in a way that most the others didn’t, but rather than up his game along with the rest of them he’s stayed exactly where he is. Song wise, this was an awful choice. Since the furore that has arisen from the David Archuleta fans I have checked out that version and while I do think it was a ridiculous idea to choose a song that had been sung successfully only last year I a) don’t think any contestant ‘owns’ a song, they are ALL cover versions and b) am not particularly enamoured with
Archuleta’s version. Yes I think he performed a really good vocal and it was a very good choice to rearrange it a little, but this is one song where the original is simply unbeatable in my opinion. So no, Danny didn’t shoot the sacred cow by choosing it.
But this song has been
covered many many times before, it has
other songs named after it because of
certain covers, it has been
sampled to high heaven and it is the reason behind the name for one of my
favourite films of all time. This song is ‘owned’ by no one apart from Ben E. King….and not really even by him these days. It has become such a large part of the public consciousness. Everyone knows it, everyone has their own memories of it, everyone has multiple memories in which it plays a big part, hell, it was the first song I learnt to play on the base and that barely figures in my memories of the song because it is such an innate part of life. ‘Stand By Me’ is a song that, to many people, has always been and will always be.
So yes, I think this was a stupid song choice and more than that, it was a lazy song choice. And this was a horrible arrangement; taking out the base line was a mistake, Archuleta kept the rhythm even if he lost the notes, and the bongos…well how do you say anything about the bongos…it really felt like being back in the 80’s, I expected to hear The Beach Boys start singing
Kokomo it had that kind of feel. And I love The Beach Boys, they’re my one of my favourite groups but that is a horrible song. However this terrible arrangement was not the real problem with the performance. The real problem was that once again Danny didn’t get going until the chorus. Danny has repeatedly shown that it takes him a while to get into the songs; ‘Jesus Take The Wheel’ and ‘What Hurts The Most’ being the most obvious examples of this. Danny needs to start coming in like he goes out. Yes, these songs need to build but we can’t feel like he’s only singing the beginning to get to the rest of the song, he has to be as interested in the quiet moments as he is in the loud ones, he has to start shaping the songs.
My big problem with Danny is that I can’t dislike him. Yes, he comes across as a little self absorbed, but we’ve seen that he comes from a big family and so it appears to be a ‘look at me look at me’ side effect of that. He does appear to be ridiculously certain of himself, he’s not an idiot, he knows he’s one of the favourites and that is making him seem a little too smug. But the real reason I can’t dislike him is because of his voice. The tonal quality of it is one I, personally, am drawn to. I’m stuck in this position of really thinking he is very over-rated because nothing he does is original at all, and this season you need to be thanks to Adam. And he’s not shown himself to be that musically talented, which this season you need to be thanks to Kris and Matt. And he’s not shown himself to have a powerhouse of a voice, which once again this season you need to be thanks to Allison. So I cannot for the life of me work out why he keeps getting praised as much as he does. But I like his voice so much. I dislike him and like him at the same time and it’s really confusing me. How do you find words for someone who bugs you and yet you want them to do well because you want to hear the voice you like singing something that doesn’t make you want to punch the television screen!!??!!
There needs to be more there than simply voice. Yes, this is a singing contest and I love his voice, but loving his voice isn’t enough, he needs to start singing songs that work. His voice worked perhaps the best of them all in last week’s version of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’. But he simply has to start pushing himself a little in the songs he chooses. There has to be some sort of progress.
I just want to add, completely unrelated to his performance, that Danny was the best dressed of them all tonight. That black suit with the fuchsia shirt really worked. It was a good use of a small amount of colour and one that suited his complexion. Because he is one of the less flashy dressers it was nice to see him in something that really looked good.
Kris:
OK, firstly, if Kris keeps on being as adorable as he is in his chats with Ryan and on his video than the over enthusiastic clapbots seen during hid performance this week are only going to get even worse. Kris, without fail, comes across as a sweet and laid back kinda guy. Having lived only a few hours away from ConwayArkansas for a year, and still having really close ties to the area, I can attest that the laid back attitude Kris exhibits is quite a common way to be. It is genuinely one of the most relaxed places I’ve ever been, even when people are stressed they come across as relaxed…maybe it’s just the slow pace of the speech but it still has the same effect.
But this was not a great performance. It was, however, not as bad as the judges made it out to be. I think, and I’ve seen a few people express the same feeling, that perhaps the judges were expecting a little bit too much after last week. It was a poor choice of song, one that didn’t lend many opportunities to show his range and changes of pace. I like that once again he tried to do something new with the song but I can also see where Kara was coming from with her ‘jazz funk homework’ comment. I like the trumpets, I thought they worked well with the arrangement, but it was not Kris’s finest hour or strongest vocal. But even with the slightly breathless nature of his singing I still didn’t notice any wrong notes, which now makes Kris the only contestant to have never missed a note.
An important aspect of the performance, and one reason it really didn’t work that well, was the positioning of it. Last week Matt seemed disconnected from the auditorium through his positioning in the ‘mosh’ pit (and I have real problems calling it that having been in a one or two real mosh pits in scummy clubs and they, under no circumstances, reflect that area…for one, there should be actual moshing taking place to be called a mosh pit!!!). Kris suffered from the same problem this week. Unlike Matt last week Kris had the added problem of getting lost in all the arms. He is quite a short man, and quite an attractive one, so all those girls, and it was ALL girls, surrounding him showing their love by clapping above their head cut him off from everyone else even the cameras. I don’t think the judges are ever going to give someone a “you performed well” comment if they perform there because they are behind the judges and you just know that Cowell and the others, possibly minus Paula, are not going to turn around to actually watch. And his positioning meant that Kris was so far removed from the rest of the band that it all just felt a little disjointed.
And these were all faults, they were, this was not the performance everyone hoped Kris was going to give. After last week’s breakthrough and the steady climb we’ve been seeing we were all hoping for another spectacular performance and we just didn’t get it. But this seemed to piss the judges off more than it should have, it was like they were personally insulted. Simon doesn’t really have a leg to stand on when it comes to complaining about people thinking Kris is attractive after his hissy fit that the others put
Kristen McNamara through instead of the more attractive woman she was singing off against during ‘the chair’ in Hollywood Week. And let us not forget his comment during World Idol where he commented that he’d just realised that what all the Idol shows had done was make “a lot of ugly people famous”.
“But it’s not about that” is simply not true. Simon knows how important looks are in the industry, how important they have always been, but are even more so now music videos are as big as they are. For a point of note, look at how little
Chad Kroeger is shown in the
Nickleback videos compared to, say,
Pete Wentz (who I just don’t see the attraction) being front and centre in
Fall Out Boy’s videos and
Gerard Way’s presence in all the videos of
My Chemical Romance. Looks matter, sex appeal counts, appealing to the ridiculously influential tween market is a must and Kris has all that in spades.
So yes, this was Kris’s weakest performance, possibly since ‘Man In The Mirror’, and next week he is going to have to focus the vocal a little more if he chooses to keep the quicker less acoustic thing going. But lets just be thankful that he didn’t get
Michael John’d and kicked out because of one bad performance.
Lil:
So Lil is her real name…and that’s about the only interesting thing about Lil’s entire segment this week. Once again she sung a great imitation version of the song. Her walk, her outfit, her vocals, her arm movements, these were all highly influenced by Tina Turner. Once again there was nothing there that was Lil, and once again she promised that if she stayed she’d do better. But it’s the same thing every week. They needn’t have spent time on the comments, just shown a tape of last weeks, or the week before that. Was it a good vocal? Yes. Did she manage to not get too lost in the song? Yes. Do I care? No.
And that’s the problem. Not me personally, I’m one person, hell, I’m one person who can’t vote because I send enough txts to the States already without including ones to shows such as this. But it isn’t just me who’s getting bored by Lil. I’m really glad she wasn’t at the bottom of the votes because I’m pretty sure the judges would have saved her. Simon has already said on Leno that he thinks the top three are going to be Gokey, Lil and Adam but I simply cannot see where he’s getting this idea from. Go almost anywhere on the internet and the audience are just not responding to Lil. Yes there are some but in comparison to the love being shown for most of the other contestants it’s barely anything. However, the hate also isn’t as strong. There just seems to be a whole lot of ‘meh’ going on.
Sure, you can’t ignore that she can sing, but so can the people on cruise ships, it doesn’t mean they have the something it takes to become famous. But I think that all the criticism Lil’s taken in the past weeks is getting to her. She genuinely doesn’t seem to know who she is anymore. She’s doing the same thing Matt sometimes does and is trying so hard to become who she thinks people want her to be that she’s stopped being herself. She seems to think she needs to fill the role of ‘belter’, power ballad singer, and that if she doesn’t no one else will. But that’s not what got her into the competition. I may not have loved the song but when she sung ‘Be Without You’ during semi-final she showed something different…or maybe she was just showing who she thought they wanted her to be then. Maybe that ‘real’ Lil was in fact not the real Lil, maybe this bland version is. But either way, that’s not a good thing.
If the judges are so sure she’s going to the final and are determined make it happen they could easily end up using the save on her and that would be a shame, because I think someone else is going to need it more, maybe Allison or Matt. The final 5 should be, without a shadow of doubt, Kris, Allison, Matt, Danny and Adam. Anyone else who makes it will, if they carry on as they are now, have knocked out a more deserving contender.
Anoop:
Well done Anoop for apologising for last week. I, like Simon, do not think that the singers should have to be sorry for being angry at the judges. The adrenalin kick you get by being on stage is enormous no matter how small the venue so I can only imagine what it feels like for these guys. I’m sure that they’re not in complete control of how they react to their comments, even less of the actual words that come out their mouths, so the occasional one getting a bit put out seems reasonable enough. But I am not an idiot and I do realise that Anoop put a lot of people’s backs out last week. So, although his apology did come across as a little ‘this needs to be done for PR’ I also understand why he did it and think he did it with enough humility that it saved his ass for another week.
As for the song, like Lil, this just wasn’t that interesting. For honesty’s sake I must point out that I hate this song. I hate this song with a passion, more so than I hate ‘Play that Funky Music’. There was no way in hell I was ever going to like this song. And yes, once again Anoop’s voice was on form in a way that it wasn’t last week, but it was boring. It was really really really boring.
And therefore I am going to say nothing more about it because I simply cannot get past that.
Well, ok, one more thing. Anoop is unreliable on a level that none of the others are. Even Megan and Michael were more consistent. Anoop is good one week, awful the next, indifferent the next, wonderful the next… and so on and so forth. I don’t believe, unlike Simon, that singing a song sung by the other sex is that different. Maybe if it were a song that was relentlessly female, a big old
Heart power ballad or maybe
Mama Cass sung by a guy could prove to be truly original but singing a song by the opposite sex is not a short cut to making something your own. And this song could be sung by anyone, it always sounds the same and it always sounds dreary.
But I really am leaving it there for now.
Scott:
I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue on to Scott but because I have so little to say about this performance I figured it would do no harm.
This was bad. There’s no other way to put it. I did, in fact, fast forward through most of it. As soon as that first truly out of tune note hit I moved on. Scott has come across as having one of the best personalities up there. He is amusing and even when he talks back it doesn’t come across as arrogant because he frames it with humour and an ‘I really sort of have to do it my way as I can’t really do it another’ type attitude.
But the simple fact is he was the worst up there. His voice wasn’t as good as any of them, his piano playing while very good lacked the pizzazz of Matt’s, and his performances are just not as entertaining.
And now Scott has left before I’ve had the chance to be really annoyed that he’s still in, so it’s the best of both worlds. I get to like the person and not yet be too annoyed that he was even there. Last week he had his best week and this week his worst. I have enjoyed spending time with Scott each week during his segment but on pure vocal talent it was his time to go.
So I wish Scott the best, I hope he enjoys the tour, and I hope he plays Billy Joel and not Survivor.
But I shall leave it here for now. I might be back later tonight as I will not get around to it tomorrow; between work and play I’m all booked up. So if it’s not up then it should be up sometime on Sunday. So take care, and “keep watching the skies” and I can’t quite believe the
episode of The Simpsons I just referenced is now 12 years old!!!
