Summary : Jonghyun is sixteen with a heart that starts beating erratically whenever he sees a certain pretty boy.
! there will be a timestamp after this chapter + sorry for any mistakes I'm still having a really high fever. also for the lack of space between sentences or paragraphes or whatever you call it. ;-; I hope you'll still enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it even though this chapter was the hardest of them all. Practice makes perfect I guess.
"Minho, no !" Jonghyun whispered angrily as his best friend pushed him towards an all too familiar locker where an even more familiar figure was standing at.
Minho had been urging him to go talk with Kibum even if he had said he didn't want to have anything to do with Jonghyun's crush on the boy. He had noticed the younger boy staring at his friend and was fed up with Jonghyun's constant whining about how in love he was and how the hell he was supposed to tell Kibum he liked him.
They had been standing at Minho's locker, talking about class and other boyish stuff when he saw Kibum pass by. He didn't miss how his eyes shot a quick glance at his friend who was obliviously standing with his back to him.
Kibum blushed embarrassedly when he noticed Minho looking at him, increasing his speed and hurriedly making his way to his locker. Minho had grinned at Jonghyun who looked back at him in confusion.
So that's how they ended up pushing each other, with Minho's encouraging, slightly annoyed, voice ringing through the hallway and Jonghyun's angry voice hushed, telling him that refused to go to the younger boy.
After unsuccessfully trying to bring his friend to actually go talk with his crush after having longed after him for more than a month, he let go of Jonghyun and heaved a loud, exaggerated sigh, "You know what, whatever, but don't come complaining to me about how badly you want to talk to him," He said a bit too loud, making a couple of students turn around and much to Jonghyun's dismay, Kibum too.
He looked back at him, cheeks on fire and eyes desperate because Minho was being way too loud and he didn't know if he did it on purpose or not.
His best friend turned around dramatically and trudged down the corridor, shouting something that sounded like "So annoying," before disappearing behind the corner.
Kibum's cheeks turned equally red and Jonghyun wasn't sure if it was because he was looking at him or because he knew that Minho was talking about him.
Everybody had gone back to what they were doing before the scene Minho had created except for Jonghyun who awkwardly stayed in the middle of the hallway, contemplating on actually going to Kibum and talk to him or just walk away as if nothing had happened.
He turned around, ready to do the latter but the moment he lifted up his leg to take the first step, he stopped himself again, closing his eyes and biting down his lip. He inhaled deeply, scenarios that could happen if he went to talk to Kibum flashing before his eyes and realizing there were more positive than negative points to it.
He let out a deep breath, turning around and confidently walking over to Kibum who had turned his back at himn rummaging through his locker.
Jonghyun stopped behind him, biting his lip again and looking down at his shoes.
Great, he thought, now what.
It took Kibum a couple of seconds to realize Jonghyun was standing behind him, eyes turning round and big and making Jonghyun melt from the inside.
He had his books pressed against his chest, the blush from a few minutes ago returning and making him look so much more endearing that Jonghyun had to restrain himself from tackling the younger boy in a hug and cover him in kisses.
"Uhm, hi," Jonghyun began awkwardly, hand going up to run through the hairs at the back of his head, avoiding the other's eyes.
"Hey," Kibum greeted back, voice soft and shy and oh-so sweet it made Jonghyun want to turn into pink goo.
He noticed the younger boy was smaller than him and almost reached his nose. He had a long slender body though, nice legs and flat tummy, he was very nice to look at, and not only because he had a pretty face.
Jonghyun swallowed.
He had to stop thinking about that kind of stuff when he was only two meters away from him, it could cause a lot of awkward and uncomfortable situations.
His eyes fell on the other's hair, it looked soft and silky and he wanted so badly to reach out and touch it, run his hand through it and tangle his fingers in it.
"You have," Jonghyun began awkwardly, pausing for a second as he connected their eyes, "nice hair," He finished lamely.
Kibum's eyes turned into little slits as he smiled, "Thanks," He said softly, "I like yours too,"
Jonghyun gingerly touched his brown locks, not finding them anything special or worth the compliment as it was just a plain haircut.
Now that he thought of it, he and Kibum basically had the same hair. Brown with side swept bangs, but Kibum's was way cooler and looked much better with it.
He let out a breathy laugh, "Thanks,"
There fell a silence after that, with Jonghyun staring at the space between them and Kibum looking down at his blue Converses, arms tightening around his books.
If people would've noticed them they could've easily felt the awkward tension between them, but luckily for the both of them nobody cared and so they stayed like that for a whole thirty seconds until Jonghyun decided he had to man up and find a topic to talk about.
"Uhm, so," He began, shifting his position a little so that he looked more casual and less tense, "what's your next class," His lips stretched out into an embarrassed smile, cheeks slightly tinted red and hair a little messy from when he had run his hand through it.
Kibum looked a little taken aback at first, blinking a few times before answering with an unsure 'physics'. Jonghyun nodded in fake interest, brains trying to come up with more interested questions that could actually lead to a decent conversation but right when he had come up with one, someone shouted a loud "Kibum !" behind him.
The younger boy stood a little on his tippy toes to look over Jonghyun's shoulder who in turn turned around to take a look at the intruder.
"Come on, let's go !" The boy on the other side of the hallway beckoned his friend to come with him and Kibum mouthed a "hold on a sec" at him before turning his attention back to the older boy in front of him.
"Im ... sorry, I gotta go," He said in an apologetic voice, looking at Jonghyun with almost desperate eyes.
Jonghyun's heart fell a little but tried to hide it, "Uhm yea, of course, it's okay," He said, failing to hide the disappointment in his voice and he mentally cursed himself.
Kibum hesitated a little, looking down to the other's chest and then back up, "I really, uhm, liked talking to you though," He said sincerely, their eyes locking and Jonghyun swore his tummy was going to explode from all the butterflies vigorously fluttering inside.
"Yeah, me too," He said, a hint of relief audible in his slightly quivering voice as they kept their eyes locked. Kibum was looking at him almost lovingly, longinly, even desperately as if he was waiting for Jonghyun to make a move on him.
"I'll be going now," He said after a couple of seconds when his friend called out for him again, "bye, Jonghyun," He said shyly looking down, blushing a little and Jonghyun's breath hitched.
"Yea, bye, Kibum," He said soflty as the slightly smaller boy trudged away, books still securely pressed to his chest.
Jonghyun turned around and watched how Kibum reached out for his friend's outstretched hand, grabbing it and letting the other pull him into the crowd.
He sighed in disappointment.
But on the other side he was proud of himself that he had mustered up the courage to go talk to him, after all Kibum said he liked talking to him, a subtle hint for Jonghyun to do it again when he had time.
He didn't miss the hasty glance Kibum shot at him right before his friend pulled him out of sight, his body burning every time he witnessed the other's eyes on him. It felt like little light bulbs exploding in his body, starting in his toes all the way up to his head where they turned into intense fireworks.
When Jonghyun met up with his best friend later that day he didn't say anything about his little chat (if you could call it that) with Kibum. He didn't want to give him the satisfaction that he was, once again, right and just had to go talk to his crush if he wanted to be closer to him.
Minho just gave him a strange look when he bounced over to him when they got dismissed, a little too hyper for his liking. He didn't question him about it though, probably because he knew that if had something to do with Kibum and really, he didn't want to have anything to do with his friend's crush anymore.
"Are you going to the soccer game ?" Minho asked when they were walking next to each other, Jonghyun's house already in sight.
He gave him a confused look, "What soccer game ?"
"It's in two weeks," Minho said, coming to a halt when they arrived at the front door. Jonghyun slung his backpack to his front, zipping open the side pocket and fishing out his keys, letting out a hum.
He opened the door and kicked off his shoes, "Probably," He said, heading for the kitchen and throwing the keys on the counter.
"Ah you're home," Jonghyun's mother chimed, jumping up from the couch and walking over to the two boys, "would you boys like to drink or eat something ," She asked with a warm smile, grabbing her son's cheek and pulling his face closer so that he could give him a big, wet kiss.
Jonghyun's face contorted in disapproval, pulling away from her and wiping at his cheek with his sleeve, Minho just laughed.
"No, thank you mrs Kim, I'm good," He said, bowing.
Jonghyun walked over to the kitchen table and grabbed an apple from the bowl, "We'll be upstairs," He informed his mother before disappearing in the hallway with Minho in tow.
"When does the game start ?" Jonghyun asked as he bit down in his apple, watching as Minho threw himself on his bed. He made his way to his desk, sitting sideways on his chair and opening his laptop.
"Six ," Minho said, holding his cellphone above his face and furiously typing away.
Jonghyun hummed, logging in to his mail. "Am I going alone ?" He asked, scrolling down all the mails he had received.
He heard Minho shift on his bed, "Not if you invite someone," He said in a monotone voice, too busy with his cellphone.
Jonghyun snorted, of course he was going alone, he always went alone. All of his friends were a part of the football team so they'd all be on the field. It wasn't that he didn't have other friends, they just weren't the type of friends he could go watch a soccer game with.
He'd probably end up in a group of girls again, they always come to him the moment they see him alone.
"I'm not going to invite someone," Jonghyun refused, logging back out from his mail and standing up from the chair. He stretched his limbs, walking over to where he had thrown his bag on the floor and sitting down on his bed next to his friend.
"Why not ?" Minho asked, voice sounding bored and uninterested as he was still too busy with the person he was texting, "you could ask Kibum." He snickered after a moment.
Jonghyun's head snapped up, glaring at Minho who rolled his eyes, "I was just joking,"
"Well, you're not funny,"
But hey, maybe it wasn't a bad idea.
--
The third time Jonghyun gets to talk to his crush, he nearly asks him to go with him to the soccer game. The words got caught in his throat the moment he looked into the other's eyes, twinkling brown eyes filled with confusion and even a little ... hope ?
He couldn't do it.
He couldn't just say "Hi, would you like to go with me to the soccer game on Sunday ?" as if they had been friends since forever. He didn't want to give Kibum hints either, he didn't want him to notice that he liked him. He felt like a total loser.
If he gave Kibum too many hints and he didn't like him back, it would be just awful. But of course, telling him he liked him and getting rejected would be pretty awful too.
He wasn't even sure if he'd ever tell Kibum.
Boys liking boys wasn't really ... normal.
The only thing that kept him going were the younger boy's glances he not so subtly shot at him.
The conversation they were having wasn't because one of them was brave enough to go talk to them, but because Jonghyun was a gentleman and helped him up when he saw him once again struggling with books in his arms when he was on his way to the principal.
It was right after class and everybody was still packing their stuff when Jonghyun had to go to the principal, he had thrown his papers at the teacher instead of neatly putting them on her desk and she had said she wouldn't "be treated like a dog".
It was a stupid reason to be sent to the principal in Jonghyun's opinion, but then again, he was just a student and teachers really didn't care about their opinion.
He found it even more stupid that he was sent there right after class instead of during class, that way he could've missed her boring lecture.
So when the bell rung he was the first one to be in the hallway while all the other pupils started packing their stuff, he speed-walked down some corridors on his way to the big man's office.
But somewhere along his way he came across a lanky figure balancing a stack of books in his arms, instantly recognising the boy when he revealed his face by dropping all the books to the floor.
Jonghyun's heart beat almost instantly sped up, watching Kibum from a distance.
He was on the verge of turning around and taking another route but bit his lip when he heard Kibum sigh. He whispered an inaudible "Come on Jonghyun, you're a man," to himself before taking determined steps towards the younger boy. He could do it.
He bent down to help Kibum pick up his books, taking the boy by surprise.
"O-oh, hi Jonghyun hyung," Kibum said in a soft voice.
Jonghyun looked up as he picked up a book and handed it over, "Hi Kibum," He smiled softly, letting his eyes linger a little longer on the other's blushing cheeks before quickly looking down again.
He hastily grabbed the other books and stood up, face red. "Uhm," He began, one corner of his mouth lifted, forming a small grin.
Kibum pulled his bottom lip between his teeth, shyly grabbing the books the other was holding and wrapping his arms around them.
"What are you doing with all those," Jonghyun said, chuckling a little.
Kibum looked up, locking their eyes, "I had to take these to the teacher's lounge," He showed him a tiny smile.
"Oh," Jonghyun puffed out his cheeks, stuffing his hands in his pockets and rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet.
His eyes were anywhere but on Kibum, trying to come up with something interesting to say.
His head shot up when he heard a soft giggle coming from the other boy, giving him an inquisitive look as Kibum's eyes were turned into little eyesmiles.
"Your hair is sticking up," Kibum said in an amusing tone.
Jonghyun was confused for a second and Kibum softly laughed again, this time a little less shy and more outgoing, as if they had been friends for years. It made the older boy grin.
Kibum crouched down and put the books on the tiled floor, standing back up and reaching out for the other's hair. Jonghyun could feel delicate, long fingers playing with a couple of strands on his head and he tried to ignore how close Kibum's face was to his right now.
"There," Kibum said with a sweet smile, letting his arms fall to his sides and taking a step back. Jonghyun was looking at him with big eyes and it made the younger boy uncomfortable, quickly picking up his books that were on the floor.
"Well, I ... gotta go now," Kibum said hesitantly, wrapping his arms tightly around the books.
Jonghyun blinked, "Uhm, yea, sure, bye," He said quickly and watched in defeat as Kibum turned his back at him and walked away.
His hand went up to his hair when the slim figure was out of sight, a grin playing on his lips as he thought back at Kibum and his long, pretty fingers fixing his messed up hair.
Wouldn't he be the perfect boyfriend, he thought, the smile on his face as bright as the sun.
--
When Jonghyun gets to talk to Kibum again, it was pure coincidence.
He was in the backyard of the school, standing with a couple of boys of his math class.
The only reason he was with them was to ask if they had homework, when suddenly another boy squeezed himself into the group, pulling Kibum with him.
Jonghyun recognised him as the one who had kissed his crush in the cafetaria a few weeks ago. He instantly felt something like a mix of jealousy and anger bubbling inside his veins at the sight of him and Kibum together.
He tried to ignore them and listen to the other boys who were summing up all the homework they had to do for today's math class but it was pretty damn impossible with the way the boy who had just joined the group had his arm around Kibum's shoulders and pulled him closer to his side.
When Jonghyun locked eyes with his crush he got a little confused, Kibum's look aimed at him was a little sad, even apologetic.
He decided to just send him a smile, one that was bearly noticeable so that only Kibum could see it.
The younger boy noticed and blushed a little, returning the smile.
"Oh look, the nerd from yesterday !" One of the boys exclaimed loudly, looking over at some kid that was passing by. His head shot up at the group and he immediately increased his speed.
"Hey, wait !" The guy that had his arm slung around Kibum's shoulder shouted, "come on guys we can't let him escape," he chuckled before they all walked over to the innocent student, cornering him against the wall of the school building.
Jonghyun frowned, turning around and noticing that the only one left over were he and Kibum. The younger boy was still watching the bullies.
"They seem pretty nice," Jonghyun chuckled lowly, proceeding to stand next to the slightly smaller boy and watching how the boys were shouting and pushing at the poor kid.
"Yeah," Kibum laughed softly.
Jonghyun saw Kibum bite his lip and frown when his friend grabbed the victum's collar and pushed him against the bricked wall, shouting something in his face. The other boys started laughing loudly at the boy who could do nothing but tremble and try to pry the other's fingers off his collar.
"Nice friends you have," Kibum shuddered, watching how the little demons began teasing the boy with his oversized glasses, trying to push them off his nose.
Jonghyun's face contorted, "Those aren't my friends, I was just asking them if we had homework," He said as a matter of fact, his heart beginning to beat a little faster, and this time it wasn't because of Kibum but because the boys had managed to steal the other's glasses and had thrown them on the grass, threatening to stomp on them.
He saw how Kibum's friend hand tightened on the other's collar. "I could say the same about your friend, though,'
Kibum looked genuinely confused for a moment, cocking his head a little to the side with a questioning look on his face, "Who ?"
"That one -- the one who acts like your boyfriend," Jonghyun chuckled, trying to come over as teasing but his voice sounded a little strained. He purposely added the last part, just because he wanted to know if Kibum maybe had a thing for him -- or the other way around.
He had seen those two interact and he knew that it was something more than friendship, two boys didn't act around each other like that if they were just friends.
Kibum scrunched up his nose in disgust.
"Dongwoon hyung ?" He questioned, folding his arms in front of his chest.
They were still looking at the bullies, one of the boys was holding the glasses up and away from their victim, laughing as the poor student tried to grab them.
"He's more like my," Kibum paused for a few seconds, "protector," He finished with a satisfied nod. "Yeah, protector." He repeated.
Jonghyun still saw this Dongwoon guy as competition.
It took Jonghyun a couple of minutes to speak up again, they had been looking at how the other boy was being teased long enough now. Normally Jonghyun would've immediately walked up to them to tell them to stop and let the poor kid alone, but Kibum had the ability to wipe everything off his mind.
He wanted to ask Kibum if he was available next Sunday, so that maybe they could go to the soccer game together. He didn't realize it was just a little stupid to ask because they weren't really friends.
They had only talked a couple of times, and those conversations never went smoothly.
There was always the stuttering and the blushing and the awkward silences.
Nothing pleasant about them, really. Jonghyun only enjoyed being so close to the other, to be able to not look at him from a safe distance but to actually face him.
He didn't know how Kibum felt about him, he really didn't know because the only signs the other gave him were coy smiles and pink dusted cheeks. And what did Jonghyun have to think about those ?
Did he have to think that he was smiling so nervously and blushing so cutely because he liked him too ? Or just because he was more of a shy type ?
He just really wanted to ask Kibum to come with him to the soccer game, that way they could bond a little and even become friends (before he would take it a step further, he would never be satisfied with only being friends)
"Say, are you," He paused for a couple of seconds, trying to come up with the right words to say, "are you going to the soccer game this Sunday ?" His voice was slightly trembling, palms a little sweating and eyes looking anywhere but the pretty boy next to him.
"Uhm yea, with a couple of friends, what about you ?" Kibum asked. Jonghyun noticed he wasn't as shy anymore as before, the blush was bearly noticeable but he could still hear the hesitation in his voice. Also, the way he was fiddling with the hem of his shirt gave away that he was still a little nervous.
Jonghyun's heart fell almost instantly at the words. Now every intention of asking Kibum to come with him to watch the game was brutally thrown out of the window along with all of his hope of ever becoming friends with the, in his eyes, most beautiful boy ever.
His shoulders sunk a little, "Uhm, yea, I'm also ... going with some friends," He said lamely, hand coming up to scratch the back of his neck.
He didn't really know what else to say. He was kind of really tired of mustering up courage only to notice that mustering up courage had been completely unnecessary seeing as it was bringing him nowhere.
"Oh, cool," Kibum said in a tiny voice, eyes cast down and staring at the space between them. He had probably noticed the sudden change of mood because all of a sudden he got back to his normal, shy behaviour. His cheeks were regaining their usual soft pink and his voice was back to the hesitant and small one.
They didn't talk for a couple of minutes, Jonghyun didn't really have something to say to him. He really wanted to turn around and walk away but he couldn't even if he forced himself.
Every second spent next to his crush was magical and even though he had just been indirectly rejected, he still wanted to be close to him.
His eyes were getting slightly teary because he was so conflicted inside, he wanted to run away from everything because really, he had mustered up so much courage to just ask Kibum one simple question only to be blown off, and now he felt obliged to stay by his side.
He wanted to be hold, he wanted Kibum to hold him and he wanted to hold him back.
Touch him, caress his face and press their lips together. He wanted to feel the other breathing against his skin, press their bodies together not in a sexual way but just to feel him, to be one with him. He didn't need anything else right now, just the comforting hug from somebody whom he cared for.
"Uhm, Jonghyun," Kibum began all of a sudden, turning his body again to face the older boy.
He pointed with his thumb over his shoulder, a little frown visible on his forehead, "I'm just gonna tell them to ... you know, stop," He said with a slight chuckle. "Maybe ... we'll see each other Sunday ?" He asked, tone not as hopeful as his eyes which were glimmering with something Jonghyun couldn't quite decipher.
"Yeah, sure," He said in a small voice, still trying to avoid the other's eyes because he was still on the brim of tears.
Kibum shot him a small smile, eyes lingering on him a little bit longer probably in hope of receiving a smile in return and when he did, turning around to walk over to the bullies.
He pulled at his friend's shoulder, making him turn around, his expression a little surprised.
A smile bloomed onto Dongwoon's face at seeing Kibum, but it was soon replaced by a frown when Kibum began to speak.
Jonghyun saw how Kibum was holding the other's wrists in his hands, bouncing a little on his tippy toes.
After a minute or two Dongwoon turned around and gave the kid back his glasses, shrugging as the other boys gave him a confused look.
Kibum wrapped his arms around his waist when the kid had quickly scurried off, Jonghyun assumed it was his way of showing his grattitude and cursed at himself when a sting of jealousy shot through his body.
He gritted his teeth when Dongwoon slung, once again, his arm over the other's thin shoulders and pulled him closer to his side.
They walked off like that.
And this time, Kibum didn't even glance back at him.
--
It was Sunday and Jonghyun was sitting on the bleachers. Alone.
His elbow was digging into his knee, chin resting in the palm of his hand as he was carefully watching the game.
His eyes were on Minho most of the time, grinning when he saw him struggle with the ball or smiling when he got tackled by someone else.
He was there all by himself, somewhere in the middle, because going with people he did like but never really hung out with was kind of hypocrite. It would seem like he only needed those friends when he had nobody else and he didn't want to come over like that kind of person.
Also, he found it kind of awkward to go with people he didn't normally talk to.
If all of his friends weren't in the football team, he would be there surrounded by a bunch of really cool guys. Unfortunately, litteraly all of his friends were in the football team and he was the only one left over.
He could've stayed home but he really wanted to go watch Minho and the others.
And of course because Kibum had said "Maybe we'll see each other Sunday" in such a sweet and hopeful way that it made Jonghyun think he maybe really wanted to see him.
From the moment he had arrived at the bleachers his eyes were frantically searching the crowd for any sign of the younger but with no success, after that he had just seated him somwhere in the middle next to one of the aisles, defeated.
The game had been going on for a couple of minutes already, right before it had started he had wished his best friend and other friends goodluck.
He had spotted Minho's parents somewhere in the front and he had walked up to them and bowed. His parents and Minho's were good friends, it was only polite to go greet them.
After telling them a lie, saying that he couldn't sit with them because he had friends waiting for him, he rushed back to his seat, the apple he had bought from the vending machine before the game in his hand because he liked to keep his body healthy.
Some girls of his class had seen and waved at him and he had waved back, immediately turning his attention back to the game because he knew that if he would give them too much attention, they would want more and come over to him. And that was the last thing he wanted.
He'd rather sit alone than with a bunch of squealing girls surrounding him. He had tried going to a soccer game with girls once and it didn't end up all too well. Too noisy, he had concluded at the end of the day, he wasn't even sure who had won.
It was six pm when the game had started. Jonghyun loved it when soccer games started this late, he loved how the huge lights went on when the sky began to darken, it was an awesome feeling.
He bit down his apple, munching on the fruit rather noisily as he watched Minho swiftly passing the ball to one of his team mates.
Somewhere he regretted not having joined the team, Minho had forced him to sign up in the beginning of the year but he had refused because it took away too much time. But to see all of them having so much fun on the field, he kind of regretted not signing up.
People were occasionally running up and down the aisles and normally Jonghyun wouldn't really take note of them, but when suddenly a familiar figure walked by he couldn't help but follow it with his eyes.
It was Kibum. And he was wearing a shirt of the school, a few sizes too big and simple jeans with his blue Converses.
Jonghyun swallowed the apple bits in his mouth, watching Kibum gracefully walking down the aisle with his perfect long legs. Then he realized that Kibum had to come back at one point.
He had to smile at him, yes, smile.
Or maybe he should hide.
No no no no, smile. He was going to smile.
Jonghyun awkwardly shifted in his seat, he really wanted to concentrate on the game but he couldn't help to glance down the aisle every now and then to see if Kibum was coming. How was he going to smile at him ? Just a gentle one or would he flash him all his teeth.
When Kibum appeared again, this time with a bottle of water in his hand, Jonghyun still hadn't made up his mind and was still having an internal debat with himself whether he should just friendly smile at him or not.
The boy was getting nearer and their eyes locked. Kibum looked surprised and smiled a little and Jonghyun in return, instead of a gentle smile or a flash of his teeth, showed off one of his grins.
He mentally kicked himself. Okay, he thought, let's hope he doesn't think I'm creepy.
Jonghyun quickly stood up to greet him when he saw the boy slowing down. "Hi," he said hastily, nervously, hands stuffed in his pockets to prevent them from reaching out and pulling the other in a hug.
"Hey," Kibum said in a small voice, tiny smile playing on his pink lips and usual blush dusting his cheekbones.
He had pretty cheekbones, Jonghyun swooned from the inside, they were high and prominent and one of the seven marks of beauty which made him all the more special.
He didn't realise he had been staring at his face for a whole thirty seconds until the people behind him began complaining because they were blocking their view. He turned around and quickly apologised, sitting back down on the bench.
Kibum did a movement with his hand as to say he had to scoot a little over and he did, a little surprised that Kibum would be sitting next to him.
"Don't you ... have to go to your friends ?" He asked hesitantly, his eyes on his apple that he had put on the ground next to his feet from the moment he saw Key appearing in the aisle.
Kibum's eyes were following the boys on the field, "They're fine without me for a couple of minutes," He gave the older boy a sidelong glance, the corner of his mouth tilted upwards in a way that made the tip of Jonghyun's stomach flip.
"Oh,"
"Where are your friends ?" Kibum asked suddenly and Jonghyun's eyes widened.
Well he didn't see that one coming.
He wanted to slap himself for telling the younger boy he was also going with friends to the game, now he looked like a total loser. Not only because he was there alone, but also because he had lied to him.
"Uhm," He scratched the back of his head in thought, ignoring as Kibum stared at the side of his face, "they're actually on the field," He said lamely, not daring to face the younger boy.
Kibum just nodded, seemingly unaware of the fact Jonghyun had lied to him a couple of days ago. It wasn't really a lie though, it was more like something that would save him from embarrassment. It's not like anyone got hurt.
They stayed like that a little longer, the sky was already getting dark and in a couple of minutes they would turn on the big lights. It was also getting a little chilly outside and Jonghyun began to notice the goosebumps on the smaller boy's thin arms.
He thought Kibum would've gone back to his friends by now but he apparently liked it with Jonghyun, he wasn't blushing anymore but his fingers were nervously fiddling with his water bottle and that in turn made Jonghyun feel uncomfortable.
He shifted a little closer, just for the sake of it. Maybe Kibum would get it a little warmer if they'd stay close.
Kibum gave him a quick look, immediately blushing when he noticed Jonghyun scooting closer to him.
"Are you cold ?" He asked in a slightly concerned tone, a frown visible on his forehead. The words had just slipped from his mouth, he hadn't even been able to muster up the courage to say them because they came out entirely unexpected.
Kibum nodded a little, looking down at his shoes in embarrassment and rubbing at his arms.
Jonghyun's heart was oozing with affection, he almost aw'd at the precious sight and he quickly, without thinking, pulled off his sweater.
He quickly fixed his hair that got messed up in the process and tossed the piece of clothing into the younger boy's lap.
"Put it on, it's still warm," He said with a gentle smile. He had no idea where all this confidence had come from but it felt awesome.
Kibum looked at it for a moment, hesitantly curling his fingers around the soft fabric. "Are you sure ?" He asked sweetly, his eyes big and round as he looked at the eldest.
Jonghyun nodded and his heart nearly exploded when Kibum sent him a grateful smile, "Thank you,"
He watched how Kibum pulled the sweater over his head, it was a little big and the sleeves reached his knuckles but he still looked precious as ever and Jonghyun wished he had his camera with him so that he could take a picture.
A satisfied smile took over his face when Kibum snuggled into his sweater,.
"Hm, it smells nice,"
Jonghyun raised his eyebrows, did Kibum just say he smelled nice ?
"Uh, thanks,"
Kibum's eyes widened for a second, then a deep blush covered his entire face probably only now realizing what he had said.
Jonghyun wanted nothing more but to kiss him.
--
Kibum had stayed by Jonghyun's side for the rest of the game, not once mentioning his friends and how they were probably waiting for him.
He seemed to enjoy being close to Jonghyun as much as Jonghyun liked being close to him.
This time it did feel like they were actually friends, they were laughing at each other's jokes, cheering when they scored and talking about how one of the boys on the field was Jonghyun's best friend. Sometimes there would be awkward silences or they would exchange shy smiles but much less than before.
When the game was over it was already dark, the boys on the field made their way to the showers and Jonghyun had been so focused on Kibum the entire time that he hadn't even noticed they had won
.
Everybody on the bleachers began to stand up and make their way down the aisles but for some reason the two remained seated.
The chattering and laughing from the people drowned out the loud thumping of Jonghyun's heart, because really, why didn't Kibum stand up ? Did he he want to wait until everybody was gone ? Did he want to stay with him for a little longer ?
The phone in his pocket vibrated and he jolted up in surprise. Kibum didn't notice, instead he was staring into nothing, probably thinking. Jonghyun wanted to ask him what he was thinking about but eventually decided against it.
The silence between them was easier to fight through than the awkward questions they would ask one another. He wanted to wait a little while before speaking up again, it was more comfortable like this.
He subtly grabbed his phone and unlocked it, glancing at the new text message from Minho that said he was dead tired and going straight home.
He quickly typed back his reply, something that said "okay" and "congrats" before pocketing the device again and looking up.
Most of the people had already disappeared from the bleachers, some couples were silently talking to each other, their sides pressed together and the girl's head on the boy's shoulder. It was sweet. And Jonghyun felt a pang of jealousy go through his chest.
"Uhm," He said, breaking the silence between them. Kibum's eyes widened a little in surprise, "how do you get home ?" Jonghyun asked. It didn't matter how much he wanted to just sit there next to Kibum, sharing a comfortable silence and enjoying the other's presence, they couldn't stay like that forever.
Kibum opened his mouth and closed it again, it was a precious sight and an unintentional smile appeared on the older boy's lips.
"On foot," He said hesitantly, fingers curling around the edges of Jonghyun's sweater and lightly pulling at it.
Jonghyun swallowed, he knew Kibum wasn't a girl and he knew he shouldn't treat him like one, but a voice in his head kept screaming at him.
"Oh, well, uh--" He began, he paused for a couple of seconds, "do you want me to --" Another pause.
Come on Jonghyun, come on, come on, come on
"Do you want me to walk you home ?" His voice was soft and sweet, he would never want to scare Kibum off.
The youngest looked confused for a moment, bottom lip pulled in between two rows of perfect white teeth before looking Jonghyun in the eye and ever so slowly nodding his head.
Jonghyun felt relief wash over him and let out an inaudible sigh, eyes twinkling because really, he was so happy Kibum accepted his offer. He couldn't care less if their homes were the complete opposite of each other, the more time he could spend with Kibum, the better.
The lights at the bleachers were still on but they both knew they were going to turn them off soon so as if on cue, they both stood up from their seats and silently, without uttering a word, made their way down the aisles. They fell into step after that, the soft patting of the soles of their shoes against the concrete the only sound reaching their ears.
The chirping of the birds had stopped a long time ago when the sun was still there, the only light provided now came from the street lamps that were lined up next to the sidewalk, giving a magical glow to the darkness.
Jonghyun followed the younger boy. Even though he knew everything about his crush, he had never seen his house before. He had figured that stalking him home after school would be a little too much.
They were walking side by side, both of them not daring to say anything because it was easier like this. It didn't make Jonghyun any less nervous to know that his crush was still wearing his sweater.
Jonghyun had his hands in his pockets but noticed that Kibum's were free, he thought about grabbing them and tangling their fingers together, something he had dreamed of doing, but his heart was beating so loud he could hardly concentrate on walking properly so he quickly shoved the thought to the side.
Jonghyun had never thought silence could be that loud.
He held his breath and closed his eyes for a second, hoping he wouldn't crash into something. He thought about was he was going to say to Kibum once he would drop him off at his house.
Would they hug ? Or would they just tell each other good night and walk away ? He didn't even know what he was going to tell his parents, he had to come home right after the game yet here he was, walking his crush home.
His eyes shot open in surprise and shock when he felt something at his arm, he looked down and in between them and noticed Kibum's hand. It had made its way to Jonghyun's wrist and was gently pulling at it.
Jonghyun was confused and his heart was ready to jump out of his chest so he just decided to go with it, letting the younger boy pull his hand out of his pocket and opening his palm, feeling a slightly smaller and much softer hand curl around his, thin and cold fingers filling the gaps between his own and all he could think about was how perfect it felt, how perfect this moment was.
He wasn't sure what was happening until they let their hands drop in between their bodies, wrapped around each other and not thinking of ever letting go because that was how magical it felt.
Jonghyun didn't dare to open his mouth, didn't dare to look to the side for the sake of not ruining the moment.
A shiver went down Jonghyun's spine. He would've never known he would ever have the pleasure of holding Kibum's hand.
They stayed silent for five more minutes until the older boy noticed Kibum slowing down.
Oh shit oh shit oh shit oh shit --
He had been so engrossed with the way Kibum's small hand felt in his that he hadn't even thought about how he was going to tell him goodbye once they would arrive at his house.
He wasn't sure what Kibum wanted to say by holding his hand, maybe they were just cold ? And it made his heart stay still for a few seconds, until the boy stopped entirely.
Jonghyun looked up at a fairly big house, he could distinguish really large windows and in one of the windows the light was turned on. The house was rugged and angular and it looked somewhat expensive.
"Uhm," Kibum said in a soft voice, their hands still attached and their eyes still refusing to look at each other.
Jonghyun didn't want to let go, he really didn't want to but he had to. He gently detached his hand from the back of Kibum's, letting his soft fingers slide out of his and when they were gone, almost cringing at the loss.
Kibum turned around so that their bodies were facing each other, but his eyes were cast down, staring at the space between them.
"I --" Jonghyun began softly, but immediately stopping again when Kibum looked up at him with something in his eyes that made Jonghyun's heart swell.
"I really liked ... today," He finished his sentence, stuffing his hands back in his pockets.
The little sparkle in Kibum's eyes from a few seconds ago vanished and he looked back down again.
"I like being with you," He added before he knew what he was saying. He screwed his eyes shut because really, that was stupid of him to say, but it was too late now an he just hoped Kibum didn't think he was a creep.
Jonghyun swallowed, "You can keep my sweater," He tried to say casually but his voice was still trembling from his previous mistake and Kibum noticed because he looked back up again, a soft smile on his face.
"Thanks," He almost whispered.
Kibum took a step closer so that the space between them was filled, he stood a little on his tippy toes and left a small kiss on Jonghyun's cheek that almost instantly flushed a bright red.
Before he could take a step back again, Jonghyun's hands shot out of his pockets and quickly grabbed onto Kibum's, not letting him step away from him just yet because he liked how close they were. He had given his sweater to Kibum and he could really use some body warmth right now. Even if that one little kiss had made his body heat up in just a few seconds.
Kibum stayed put, eyes looking down at Jonghyun's chest and body frozen.
"I really like you," Jonghyun whispered because that way Kibum couldn't hear the tremble in his voice.
The younger boy kept silent, slowly lifting up his head and letting their eyes meet.
He was so close Jonghyun could almost feel his breath against his face.
They gazed into each other's eyes and Jonghyun felt that even though Kibum hadn't said a word, he would still allow him to kiss him.
And so he did.
He brought his face closer to Kibum's, bending his back just slightly so that their lips could touch in the sweetest way possible.
Perfect.
He separated their hands and cautiously let his arms slide around the other's waist, allowing Kibum to come closer and he did, taking a little step forward so that their bodies touched as gentle as their lips. Kibum had put his hands carefully on Jonghyun's shoulders, softly caressing the skin of his neck with his thumbs and shivering when he felt the other's arms tighten around his lithe form.
Still perfect.
When they separated it was all shy smiles and pink cheeks and time for Kibum to go inside.
"I really like you too," Kibum's pink lips turned into a cute smile, eyes turning into little half moons and twinkling just as much as Jonghyun's.
Jonghyun just smiled back, a handsome smile, not uttering a single word because that's what he was best at, and pulling his -- boyfriend ? a little closer, kissing him again.
