There are 615,000 words in the Oxford English Dictionary but there are only about 200,000 in common use. (the french use a mere 100,000)
Culacino- the mark that is left on a table by a moist glass (Italian)
Hygge- instantly satisfying and cosy (Danish)
First chapter through Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson, already love it. A whole book on language, so excited to read it. Alternating it with 31 Songs by Nick Hornby for some light reading about the love of music (very good, easy book) and Awakenings by Oliver Sacks who is an absolutely brilliant neurologist. It's a really good book, the prologue is a bit of a hard slog with all the medical jargon. That being said, it's not overly complex and once you get past the prologue the case studies are fascinating and very readable. Or if you wanted you could just rent the movie, with Robert DiNero and Robbin Williams. I haven't seen it yet but I think it won an oscar.
