[The gas wears off sloooooowly as she speaks; Alexia is standing on the landing in her flowy purple dress and long white gloves, gesturing regally. The portrait is swung out behind her, but the door to the hall is closed.]

But for now, why don't you tell me what you're thinking? It's tedious, being alone with my brother, no matter how dear he is to me -- I find myself seeking conversation.
