BT finally sent an engineer (the same one who came in December) on Thursday, and he diagnosed a fault at the exchange, and lo! they fixed it! It wasn't anything to do with my computer, my modem (the old one or the new one I bought to replace it) or the microfilters (the old ones or the new ones I bought). On the grand principle of good or bad things going in threes, the hot-water tap in the kitchen is refusing to work, the curtains in both bedrooms have fallen down, and my internet connection has become patchy or worse.
