Indulgence

On Tuesday evening I was invited to see eight-year-old Lois's violin concert/exam in Muswell Hill, and spent what seemed like hours watching a succession of ever tinier and more doll-like children playing huge violins with what seemed to my cloth ears like astonishing ability. Rather daunting for someone like me, who can just about carry a tune in a bucket and never learned to play anything except "Ye Banks and Braes" on recorder when I was her age. Afterwards, we all went to a distant cousin's (Lois' not mine) for tea and scones in the garden. I had cake and two scones but no cream and wobbled home feeling slightly virtuous.

Yesterday I was back in Muswell Hill, wandering about with Lauren. We had lunch in the rather spectacular Irish pub converted from a Victorian church, and did the charity shops, scoring a modest total of five books between the two of us. Then, I'm afraid, we had more cake. Today, I have to work, sort seedlings, and not eat cake.

I've been accumulating commissions for character monkeys, some even with offers of payment; so far, I've been asked for Hermione from Harry Potter (for Lois), The Dude from The Big Lebowski (birthday present for a friend's husband; there may be problems with the bowling shirt) and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver (Lauren's boyfriend; again, possible problems with the army shirt). Photographs will be produced if I get any of them done.
