Health and weight-related news items this week:
From a World Cancer Research study published in the BMJ and
reported by the BBC "Invest in a healthier lifestyle today and we can reap the benefits of reduced disease risk and longer life tomorrow."
From a joint CDC/National Cancer Institute study in the Journal of the American Medical Association
reported in the New York Times - "overweight people have a lower death rate because they are much less likely to die from a grab bag of diseases that includes Alzheimer's and Parkinnson's, infections and lung disease. And that lower risk is not counteracted by increased risks of dying from any other disease, including cancer, diabetse or heart disease."
So, the conclusion seems to be that I should move to the US, where I would be reborn as a healthy sylph, but I think I might hold on until someone, somewhere (probably Greece) publishes conclusive proof that smoking is good for you. More seriously, I haven't yet read the JAMA paper yet, but I have always wondered about the current weight categories and what is defined as overweight or obese.
