Where did you grow up? Suburban Boston, MA, United States
WHAT DO YOU CALL:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
A stream probably.
2. The thing you push around the grocery store?
Grew up calling it a shopping cart, which is par for the course around here; now sometimes I call it a cart, sometimes a trolley
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
Lunch box.
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
Frying pan.
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
Sofa or couch, interchangeably.
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
Gutter (and downspouts).
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
Porch. Although when the screen walls and door were removed from the side porch on my house, leaving it just open on the sides with only floor and roof, my mother told me that it was now technically a veranda, because porches were closed off and verandas were open. But I still call them all porches. Veranda just sounds too posh for my taste. :P
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
Soda. Pop is a relative, not a beverage.
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
Pancake.
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
Sub.
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
Swim trunks.
12. Shoes worn for sports?
Grew up calling them sneakers, which is par for the course around here; now sometimes I call them sneakers, sometimes trainers.
13. Putting a room in order?
Cleaning if I'm just picking stuff up and putting it away; organising if I'm putting it away in a deliberate fashion so as to be less likely to need to clean in the future. :P
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
Firefly. Sometimes called lightning bugs around here.
15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?
Pillbug? Not sure what insect this one means.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
Seesaw.
17. When private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Yard sale. 'Garage sale' is used in this area interchangeably; occasionally 'rummage sale' is used. 'Moving sale' if the people selling their stuff are indeed moving; a moving sale holds the promise of a lot more stuff than a regular yard sale.
18. The evening meal?
Grew up calling it dinner, which is par for the course around here; now sometimes I call it dinner, sometimes tea
19. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
Basement. Cellar is also used a lot around here.
20. The thing that you can get drinking water out of in public places?
Water fountain. Supposedly the Boston word for this is 'bubbla' (bubbler), but I've never known anyone who calls it that.
21. How do you eat your pizza?
Sliced (like
this, not cut up into little bits), with my hands.
