I'm a 21 year old dude, ftr, just stating that for the sake of making it clear I'm not a minor. Pre-T but dress and act the part mostly. (Not much acting though since I've always been a tomboy and have never really done the "girl" thing.)
I'm not out, only to my wife and she's been made clear that there is no talk about this to anyone else. Well, I was just chatting with my mom on a visit about some things. How the kid was doing, how her job was going, and whatnot. I've always been pretty adamant about changing my name for a long time, before I was even honest to myself about my feelings about being born "wrong". I made the idea of changing my name clear to my parents long ago but I thought I'd bring it up again since I still planning to see her post-transition. (I want her to get my name right and the pronouns so we can avoid confusion.) I just casually said, "I'm thinking about changing my name legally this summer. Want to hear what I have on my list?"
Well, I guess saying this triggered an A-bomb in her head. She flipped, saying I was calling her a bad mom, that I hated her, and accusing me of trying to alienate her from my family. Well, ok then. Whatever. I just let her finish her tirade and quietly sipped my Pepsi, waiting for her to tell me to get out of her house or whatever but she didn't. She just stormed off with tears and hid in her room. After a few minutes, I guess she did some googling and told me it was expensive plus I would have to post it in the paper so people could protest it. I kinda gave her a funny look and told her that I hoped she would respect me enough not to do something that asining. She gave me a vague "I could be there" in response. I wouldn't put it past her but I'm not trying to be too negative.
So, my question mainly is, can people actually come running into a court proceeding for a name change screaming "I object!" and actually be able to halt the process? Or is it something completely less dramatic? (And no, I don't plan on telling her before court, I'm not that big of a bone head.)
