United States Passports

Hey guys, quick question here to see if anyone can help me out.

I was born in Texas, but currently live in California. I am looking to get a passport to fly out of the country, but one of the requirements for a passport is to bring in your birth certificate to prove you're a US Citizen. I've legally had my name changed and had top surgery. My Driver's License says Male, and I have paperwork saying my name is changed. Would bringing an official copy of my name change paperwork along with my original birth certificate be suffice, or do I really need to tackle the Texas system required to change my name/birth gender on my birth certificate? (My top surgery doctor can write a letter saying I've had irreversible sex reassignment surgery, but since it's "just" top surgery, I am not even sure that'd be suffice for Texas.)

Just curious if anyone born in Texas has successfully gotten a passport without getting their birth certificate legally changed? Any help/advice is appreciated. Obviously the best course is to just call the passport people and ask, but they're so busy and difficult to get a hold of I figure asking here could at least give me an idea of whether it's not worth my time to even try etc. Thanks!
