i didn't have my surgery out here, but i would imagine that staying in a hostel while trying to recover from surgery would be less than ideal. no personal space, etc.

Use http://www.expedia.com/ That's what I did. Got a room at the Renoir Hotel (ideal location for our purposes despite being in the ever-sketchy Tenderloin district) for $49 a night, which is not their regular rate. I used http://www.travelocity.com/ for the aeroplane tickets and got a good deal on those, too.

I didn't have my surgery in SF, but I was recently out there for a week long vacation and stayed here:
Travelodge
It was $70/night for a king size room. It was clean, in a safe neighborhood, and very convenient to a lot of restaurants, fast food, walgreens, etc. The owner, Rocky, was also really nice. I have no idea how far it would be from where your surgery is though... this place is on Lombard Street in the Marina area...

Good luck!

i used a website like vacationrentals.com or vacationhomes.com. they are privatly owned apartments or houses that can be rented out for days or weeks. I found them to be comparable to hotel prices, and most include a kitchen which is convenient and saves $ by not eating out the whole time.

when i was in sf a few weeks ago i stayed at the elements hostel (2524 mission). it was only $54 per night for two of us in a private room w/bathroom en suite. you can check it out or make a reservation at hostels.com. good luck.

I second the recomendation for elements. It's my favorite place to stay when I go to SF. The private rooms are nice - and clean. There are TVs in the room and I bet you could bring a vcr or dvd player and hook it up to the TV and you'd be all set. Included in the cheap price is a REAL continental b-fast each morning with a piece of fruit and a big roll or muffin. Also, when you're feeling better there's a cool bar on the roof!
