Last week Ruth and I visited the liquor store so she could get some Bailey's and some Kaluha (both of which she drinks on ice during the summer). I picked up a small bottle of
Disaronna and as I was about to check out I saw a bottle of Evan Williams Honey Reserve.
Now, I really enjoy Kentucky Bourbon, especially
Evan Williams (they have a single barrel vintage that is pretty near the top of my list... almost tastes like caramel). But honey flavored bourbon? I grabbed a small bottle and decided to give it a try. And man, am I glad I did!
I guess I was expecting mostly a hard bourbon with a hint of honey taste, but what I got was the opposite, and in a really good way. The stuff pours with a luxurious light-golden viscosity, thicker than I expected. And it smells a little bit lemony. But man, oh man, it drinks smooth. Wonderful choice for after dinner as a digestif, especially on the rocks, or for late-night patio talks. Heck, if I was going on a train trip any time soon, I'd bring some of this along in a flask.
Its about 70 Proof compared with the normal black label Evan Williams at something like 86 Proof. So, it is a little more "drinkable." One of the marketing phrases is "All Flavor. No Sting." I'll agree with that.
Anyway, as I branch out and expand the bar, I enjoy making these delightful little finds. The clerk at the store, when we were checking out, mentioned that honey and bourbon has long been used for medicinal purposes, and I can see that.
I also found out they have a Cherry Reserve as well, which I may have to try, though now there's no rush... I have a great bottle of the Honey Reserve to last me for a while.
