[anime] Sailor Moon; The Outer Senshi: Although I Do Not Hope To Turn Again

Sep 11, 2005 11:53

So, yesterday I was minding my own business when a friend called me over to marathon Sailor Moon S. There's nothing like a group of people in their mid-twenties watching shows for 8-year-old girls, is there? I last saw Sailor Moon S a long time ago, on unsubbed VHS masters off of LD - so it was really nostalgic and very weird to be watching the DVD versions, where you could see all the fetish demons, panty shots, lesbian innuendo, and interminably long transformation sequences the way they were meant to be seen! (Although I think the VHS static somehow replicated the acid trip the creators were obviously on.) If you're of a certain age (and usually female), you can't deny having seen at least SOME Sailor Moon.

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon is about a bunch of teenage girls who can transform into magical warriors to fight the forces of evil threatening the earth. Y'all know that. There's a sailor soldier for all of the planets of the solar system, and a bunch of minor ones for asteroids and moons and things. The outer planets of the solar system - Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto - have a particularly messed up group of girls as their representatives. They're all older than the other girls - they are COOL OLDER WOMEN at the age of 16-18 - and  inspire lustful admiration (Haruka), wistful envy (Michiru), polite unease (Setsuna), or alternating love and terror (Hotaru) in the five Inner senshi.

Fan opinion is sharply divided over whether these four are the best thing since sliced bread or evil traitorous bitches who are meaaaaaaaan to the poor little inner senshi.

I personally think that neuroses add charm to a girl's character! :D

[ FULL ZIP HERE ]

SAILOR URANUS, TEN'OU HARUKA ( 天王 はるか) (the soldier of the earth and wind)
The tall, boyish, slightly arrogant one who loves to flirt with cute little girls. The inners have to keep reminding each other that they aren't lesbians. No, seriously. Hell, I'd hit that.
The Creatures - Fury Eyes [ lyrics ] [ about the band ]
T. Raumschmiere - A Very Loud Lullaby [ about the artist ]

SAILOR NEPTUNE, KAIOU MICHIRU ( 海王 みちる) (the soldier of the oceans)
The beautiful, refined princessly girl who can play the violin while bouncing a lemon on it, swim incredibly well, and paint goofy new age watercolors of dolphins leaping through space. I just can't get myself to like this condescending wench.
The Creatures - Seven Tears [ lyrics ]
Outside - To Forgive But Not Forget [ about the artist ]

SAILOR PLUTO, MEIOU SETSUNA (冥王 せつな) (the soldier of time)
The mysterious, reserved older woman who only appears to give cryptic statements and stop time for plot purposes. When I played the Sailor Moon fighting game, I took great pleasure in breaking Chibi-Usa's back over her knee. SHINING WIZARD, SMALL LADY!!1
The Creatures - Pluto Drive [ lyrics ]
Modest Mouse - The Cold Part [ lyrics ] [ about the band ]

SAILOR SATURN, TOMOE HOTARU (土萌 ほたる) (the soldier of death and rebirth)
She's a sickly girl (half-cyborg in the manga) who has the power to heal, but also has two equally destructive alternate personalities battling it out inside her - one good, and one evil. I find her fun because she has multiple personalities and sometimes tries to choke a bitch.
The Creatures - Exterminating Angel [ lyrics ]
Curve - Doppelgänger [ lyrics ] [ about the band ]

Comments? Questions? Links to good fic about these characters? (preferably not Haruka/Michiru waff; I can't get over the urge to slap Michiru long enough to suspend disbelief) You can also smack me for using a Creatures song for each of the characters, but they all fit! Sorry about that. ;;^^

(p.s. bonus dork points if you recognize the symbol I used in the background of the songlist)
