I started writing this for a prompt from
here, which was this:
"Gokusen - Uchi/Natsumi (Shin's sister) - Uchi is a somewhat bumbling boyfriend, which Natsumi thinks is endearing, and Shin plays the part of protective older brother."
But I have no idea where I was going to go with it (this is rather true of everything I write), and I'm now resigned to leaving it unfinished, in the hopes that if I drop off some old stuff, I may be able to write something new sometime soon!

It's so ridiculous, the way that Uchiyama thinks 'sneaking' out of class early (tripping over at least two desks on the way, smiling sheepishly and staying on hands and knees to crawl on out the door) and then tearing across the school grounds complete with flailing arms and a guitar case banging against his back with every stride is inconspicuous. Ridiculous, and a little pathetic, the way he stops short of the school gates to run a finger around his (open) collar and smooth down the bottom of his shirt before stepping out onto the path and looking around hopefully for-
(And Shin was just about to feel sorry for him, too.)
"I, uh, huh, yeah, hi." Uchiyama conjures up his best smile to hopefully melt away the memory of how cool that sounded.
"Uchiyama-kun," Natsumi smiles back. Her words are confident, but her smile is small and tight, like she expects to be caught any minute. She's putting a lot of effort into keeping her eyes on Uchiyama and not glancing behind him. "So where are we going today?"
-
"You've made a mistake in that sum," Shin points out inbetween yawns, "so that's why I can't complete it."
Yankumi's eyes widen as the rest of the class bursts into sniggers and crows of delight, and she turns and almost pounces on the board, using her finger to follow the line and work out where she's gone wrong.
Uchi uses this moment to begin his escape, grinning gratefully at Shin as he does so. Shin just nods, and watches the grin turn a little guilty as Uchi steps away (into a chair). The second Uchi is out the back door, Shin stands up and stretches idly, walks to the front of the classroom and lets himself out as though he has all the time in the world.
He is a good third of the way down the hall before he hears Yankumi yell his name. And by then he has broken into a run.
By cutting across the bikesheds he can climb over the wall and come round to the front of the school, hanging back behind a corner. He just has time enough to peer back over and see Uchi pausing before the entrance, and then looks round the corner and knows for sure that the girl his friend is rushing out to meet is his sister.

This will be the third time Shin has shadowed them on a 'date'. The third, and most dangerous time. The first time, once he'd realised what was happening, he had wanted to just walk right out right then and there, wrap his hands around Uchi's neck and throttle him. He'd been restrained by reminding himself that it wouldn't take long at all for Natsumi to see what an idiot Uchi was (a great friend, a generally good guy, but not boyfriend material, not for his sister, not at all), and then she would leave before any real damage could be done.
Except, two hours later he was still following them and it had happened. The hotdog incident.
"Go on, try it!" Uchi was saying, waving it in Natsumi's face, which was wrinkled up in disgust all around the nose area. And for once, he wasn't being a forceful jerk, just a little bit overenthusiastic. He had tried to push a love of hotdogs onto almost everyone he knew. Which made what happened next a little unfair, even in Shin's opinion. Though if he had the option, he'd still always let it happen again.
Uchi held one end of the hotdog just a little too far from the middle, and just a little too loosely in the moment he chose to thrust it once again towards Natsumi, 'just for one little taste, just the end?'. The hotdog, bun, sauce and everything, slid as gracefully as it could onto Natsumi's lap, and Uchi was left with nothing but a crumpled paper napkin in hand.
Even after she got most of the special sauce off, there was a huge grease stain spreading across Natsumi's school skirt.
Shin was just waiting for the outrage and Natsumi's storming off to happen when she broke into a surprised laugh.
"I think I'll have to ask Kaori-chan to take this and wash it for me; I don't know how I'd explain it at home!"

Having written off the first time as dumb luck, and shaking his head at his sister's good nature that lead her to agree to dates with fools, Shin was obligated to follow them on their second date, just to be sure that this time his sister realised she had made a huge mistake, had nothing in common with Uchiyama, and told him very politely but firmly that there was no need really for them to see each other again, and that she hoped if they ever ran into each other because of Shin, they could behave appropriately.
It sounded so good to Shin that he replayed it in his head all throughout the date, not realising that there was no suitable point for it to fit in anywhere at all during the course of the day, until it was all over and they were saying goodbye.
The only thing that could console Shin after that was that at least Natsumi hadn't let Uchi kiss her yet (and if she had, they both would have known much sooner than Shin would've liked that he was following them). He had stood there, leaning down hopefully with his chin thrust right out as subtle as a brick in the small of your back and Natsumi had just laughed at him and said a very soft but firm, "Goodnight, Uchiyama-kun."
