Synechthry [Prince of Tennis: Yuuta, Syuusuke, Tezuka]

Jan 27, 2007 16:30

Yuuta, Syuusuke, Tezuka, some eventual Seigaku Regulars. Set during their second year, and originally inspired by this prompt: Synechthry: The state of living together in enmity from the prompt table. Hopefully I'll add more at some point.

-

He is watching TV when Syuusuke holds a muffin on a plate in front of his face.

"I hear you're coming to Seigaku." He says with a smile. Yuuta can't help the suspicious look that encompasses his face, but he takes the plate anyway. Mostly to make his brother leave.

It's not like it wasn't an obvious decision anyway; their parents liked the look of the school last year when Syuusuke was moving up a grade, and it was still turning out just as successful students this year.

-

"Yuuta! Yuuta!" He tries to speed up his steps, but Kikumaru is quicker than lightening. "Hi! You remember me, don't you? Kikumaru Eiji?"

"Mmm, yeah." Yuuta mumbles. Of course he remembers; Eiji has been a regular visitor to their home since the middle of Syuusuke's first year. Eiji looks pleased to be recalled, but before Yuuta can excuse himself and slip away, Kikumaru is calling over a couple of second years he doesn't know.

"Hey, Oishi! Inui! Wait for me!" He says, and they stop. "This is Fuji Yuuta-kun. He's Fuji's younger brother."

Oishi and Inui say their polite hellos, and Inui enquires as to whether Yuuta will be joining the tennis club also. Yuuta nods eventually, but can't help thinking later about the description of himself. It echoes bitterly around his head.

-

Tezuka is vice-captain this year, and finds himself buried under all the responsibilities the captain doesn't want to do that he can possibly palm off onto the vice-captain instead. Like supervising the first-years doing their exercises and racket-swings. They are all working well, though there are a couple he would like to single out for their constant muttering towards one another. Before he can he senses a prescence next to him.

"Three weeks, two days, and counting." Fuji says, wearing in the Regulars jacket he acquired in the last ranking tournament of freshman year, when the third-years were graduating, and they no longer really counted as freshmen at all.

Tezuka doesn't look at him, doesn't respond. Fuji has mentioned his brother more than once to the few people who would listen, and still Fuji Yuuta has not found his way to the tennis courts. Tezuka personally thinks therefore he can't be worth this much enthusiasm. But he is interested because it matters to Fuji.

-

"Practice went well today." Syuusuke says as he sets the table for dinner. Yuuta is already in his seat, playing a computer game on his hand-held. "Eiji only earned himself ten laps, and I think when the next ranking tournament starts in a few days, Inui will earn himself a spot no matter who he faces."

"Aniki, I can't concentrate if you talk," Yuuta says, waving his hand as though to deter a fly. Syuusuke nods, smiles and finishes arranging the cutlery in silence.

-

Soon enough Yuuta gives into the curiosity, unable to keep listening to his brother talk about all these different people without knowing who they are. He doesn't join the team straight away, but he lingers by the fence, watches and tries to keep his fingers from curling through the wires.

"Are you looking for someone in particular?" A friendly voice asks, and Yuuta recognises the owner as Oishi. The second-year smiles down on him. "I think your brother is around here somwhere..."

Oishi glances round to check the courts for Fuji, and when he turns back to speak to Yuuta, finds him gone.

-

"I'm not keen on players who bring their own rackets and then simply spectate." Tezuka says from behind Yuuta one day.

"I'm not part of the club." Yuuta replies sulkily.

"So either stop bringing your racket along, or start joining the first-years in their laps." Tezuka says. Yuuta meets his eyes for a glaring match, but it only lasts mere seconds before Yuuta gives in and joins the joggers.

Tezuka never even so much as asked his name.

Thank you, Fuji says silently, smiling in Tezuka's direction as he and Inui watch over the first-years, timing their laps on the stop-watch.

-

"That vice-captain," Yuuta says awkwardly into the silence, and then stops. Syuusuke is looking at him expectantly, resting his book on his knees as to give Yuuta his full attention. Yuuta swallows; he can't call back his words now.

"That vice-captain," he repeats, as though he hadn't spoken the first time, "does he ever play, or does he just watch everyone else?"

"Ah, Tezuka?" Syuusuke asks, as though they weren't both absolutely sure who Yuuta was talking about. "Oh Tezuka plays, Yuuta. Once you've seen it, you'll never forget it."

"No-one's mentioned it." Yuuta retorts. So he can't be that good.

"Silence doesn't mean lack of recollection." Syuusuke shrugs. "Maybe he's so good that the first-years you've asked can't find words for it."

"Well now I'm asking you!" Yuuta exclaims.

"Strange, I heard a completely different question." Syuusuke smiles, and goes back to his book.

-

"I see you had a hand in the ranking match orders." Fuji says to Tezuka at practice. Captain couldn't be bothered again, huh?

"I don't mind." Tezuka shrugs. Fuji glances at the lists again, though he already knows what he will see.

"You didn't give yourself an easy ride."

"I haven't played a real match in a while." Tezuka says stiffly. He flexes his arm a couple of times before picking up his racket.

"Inui and I are in the same block." Fuji says, pointing his finger to Inui's name on the list. "Are you hoping he'll gather some new data on me?"

"New data would suggest he had any on you to begin with." Tezuka walks onto the court for his match. Fuji laughs lightly behind him.
