A question about Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler

Jun 13, 2012 20:29

In the original version of "A Scandal in Bohemia": Did Sherlock Holmes fall in love with Irene Adler or not?

Contra: Watson said Holmes never fell in love. And Sherlock himself wouldn't ever get the idea to use the words "love" and "I" in the same sentence without a negative verb. The time Sherlock and Irene knew each other was so short that it was unlikely that romance was in the air. (Moreover, they both knew she just married a man who loved her.)

Pro: Sherlock was, despite his brains, only a man and human. Irene Adler was, in his own words, a very beautiful and impressive woman who bested him. (He described her in very romantic terms in the story.) They went through a quite romantic adventure with each other with all the disguises and she nursing his wounds. He was the best man of husband and and was standing as near to a bride during a wedding as one could ever expect from a character like him. He actually even kept the picture of her, which was a very sentimental gesture, considering that he didn't seem to be the type that kept other people's photos. (The photo was meant to be a souvenir for her ex-lover, too!) And Watson was not the most reliable narrator to begin with.
