An African Wild Dog in Texas

Oh hi, Livejournal. Yes, I still use you - mostly to read, but occasionally to post. And this is one of those occasional times.

So this past weekend I went out to Austin, TX to stay with PacerFox and Ipequey with the intent of going around and sampling various BBQ restaurants in the area. The whole idea for that come up back over Easter weekend, during dinner with Aeto and Liz at Famous Dave's in Southcenter Mall (Tukwila, WA) on the Saturday night of NorWesCon. I had United miles to use before they expired, and this was a good excuse to finally use them.

Other than the flight from SEA to SFO being delayed by 45 minutes (low cloud at SFO) and then the flight from SFO to SAT delayed by 2 hours (again due to that low cloud causing the inbound aircraft to be delayed), there weren't any real travel problems. The most interesting part of the travel was the flight on Monday morning out of GRK (Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport), as this airport is technically inside of the Fort Hood Military Reservation. Both the base and the airport share the taxiways and runway, so it was interesting to taxi past all the military aircraft there.

For the BBQ places, we went to:
  • Stiles Switch in Austin on Friday night
  • Kreuz Market and Smitty's Market in Lockhart (BBQ Capital of Texas) for lunch on Saturday. Below are photos of the pit BBQ itself.

  • Texas Land and Cattle on Saturday night. Including that here because I had a Smoked Sirloin for dinner

  • The Salt Lick in Round Rock on Sunday night
On Sunday, we met up with Utunu and Kikivuli (since they also live in the Austin area) and finally had the two realistic African Wild Dog costumes that exist in the fandom meet!

We found a good background for these photos at the nearby Champion Park in Round Rock. The grass was nice and long with the skies clear and blue, so it gave a good look to the photos. Thanks to PacerFox for taking the photos there!

All in all, a good weekend trip.
