There's an old lady who lives four houses down from me on my street and she always seems to be out on her front porch whenever I walk my dog. She's super nice and always has a beaming, ear-to-ear smile when Joey and I pass. I usually take the time to exchange pleasentries in an attempt to brighten her day, but I've noticed a startling trend in our passing conversations. Every time they are exactly the same.
Old lady smiles while rocking in her chair and leans forward.
Jon: Good morning(afternoon, evening)! How are you today?
Old Lady: (Blank stare at me as if she heard me but has no idea what I said, then beaming stare at Joey)
Jon: Good.
Old Lady: Darling dog, what kind?
Jon: It's a puggle.
Old Lady (Blank stare and smile)
Jon: A pug and a beagle mix.
Old Lady: (Blank stare, smile, and nod)
Awkward Silence
Old Lady: I had a dog once. (Leans back in chair, no longer involved in a conversation, lost in her thoughts.)
Jon: Okay, bye bye. Enjoy your day (evening)!
This has happened probably 20 - 30 times. I'm not sure what to do. She's a nice lady and I hope that she gets some joy out of our exchanges.
