In reference to THIS EARLIER ENTRYThe other day, Dad related to me that he also noticed the car and was a little interested himself. But at the same time, a low-mileage Daewoo sedan is being sold by a neighbor up the road. VW chassis, subaru engine. It would be all off the shelf parts, and minimize fabrication.

Which VW? Which Subaru? Beyond the upsides you give, what makes them "right"?

Well, the Bradly is based on the old VW bug chassis. Short of building some sort of tubeframe from the ground up, it's the most feasible starting point. Suspension choices for the VW chassis are plentiful, from race car track setups to off road to comfortable street. You could use a air cooled vw engine, but I would go with the slightly more modern Subaru EJ motor with the VW transmission. It has the same flat 4 layout as the VW, so it will fit, and it has been done before, so no exotic fabrication. You'll get at least double the horsepower and much better reliability, and depending on budget you could easily have a 400hp car.

The condition that this particular machine is in, if we get it we may just tear out the whole works and start over anyway. The previous owner, I noticed, had it rigged for a front-engine layout, so he might not have used any VW components in it.
