Lipin III
Hey.
I guess I ought to introduce you...my brother Dana's best friend is one John Lipinski III, or as I sometimes refer: "Johnski" or "Lipin III". That fact that he looked like the titular character of the Japanese cartoon Lupin III was more than a bizarre coincidence (not that he cultivated the look intentionally...he never even heard of the cartoon before he met me!). His life has always been like a weird comic soap opera. He met my brother because he was interested in a girl who rode the same bus route as my brother's. And so, Lipin III would hang out with Bro at our place after riding the bus...and always failing to woo yon girl, whose name I remember but will not mention, to protect the innocent.
His friendship with my brother was the best thing to ever happen to Lipin III. The attempts to win the girlfriend just kept getting more and more disasterous--and Dana finally got Johnski to give it up and move on. Dana was the only friend around when Johnski needed him. It didn't end with school--Johnski followed Dana to North Carolina and they shared housing and workplaces. Lipin III is back in Florida now...and perhaps happier now than he's ever been.
His birthday was this week, and we called him tonight to wish him well and get a little caught up on things. He works at his old High School as a janitor/groundskeeper crewman and often does his part to straighten out the teenage boys. He helps foster children too.
I'm thinking that if I get to return to Florida this year, I'll make a special effort to see him.
