Man Accesses His LJ With a Slide Rule--Film At Eleven!

Sep 05, 2008 17:43

Hey.

Got my Dad to teach me a skill that is beyond the capabilities of the pocket calculator and the Calculator program provided with Windows: deriving the Cube Root.

When he was in the Federal Government, he used a Slide Rule everyday, and I have two of the three he used to use. So he got the Slide Rule in his hand and his memory sparked and he showed me how, along with the instructions on the back. I took notes. I put the notes where I would expect to find them if I needed them. And I did some practice to make sure I understood him and myself. (Yes, that sounds schizoid...but you learn best only one way, right?)

Modern computers pamper us but don't do everything--yet. Do the Math.
