Into the Digital

Dad got the first of our two "allotted" digital TV receiver boxes this afternoon. I got it running on our living-room TV set within five or six minutes. The most time-consuming part was when it scanned the spectrum for our channels. Now it's no longer 5.7 channels (and nuthin' on), it's 10.7 channels and maybe something on, but no guarantees.

tv, shopping, money, technology transfer, errands

Those digital boxes frighten me something terrible.

I'm not even really sure why. I think it might be because of the possibility of error -- on a normal signal, you can still recieve a "fuzzy" station, even if it's just winding lines, snow, and audio. But it's something. Digital doesn't allow that.

Why the hell phase out something that works? :(

1) They need the frequencies currently occupied by TV for other things now.

2) If a signal is weak the picture "mosaics" like a YouTube flash video. I noticed this from the CW affiliate we have, which doesn't come in all that much better. But there is a distinct lack of snow or static from the digital receiver.

I'm not worried about the stations the listings tell me I'm supposed to get, but don't. *shrug*
